Learn how to land :D
Flying in all the old Final Fantasy games had you exploring multiple continents, and it took off straight up like a VTOL. This one has you flying around like 20km* with only 1 single place making it useful, and that single place being rigged with a 100ft runway facing a cliff.
It's pretty stupid...
Typically I don't really care because it doesn't matter but, if you're going to insult someone else's capability with written language please make sure to use the correct spelling of the homophone "there".
Most people see that and realize they should probably back up as far as possible to give themselves as much room as they can to take off. You only have yourself to blame if you ran into the cliff because you started too close.
I realized the issue myself and had plenty enough room to take off. Of course I then completely failed the landing on the road outside the restricted area and crashed into a game over.....
I simply reloaded the save I made before getting into the car to fly out and was more careful the second time. The same way I recover every time I crash the jet-car. That's because I realize it's pretty much the only way in the entire game to get a Game Over so I'm smart enough to save at the last possible point before getting into the deathtrap for a flight.
I do agree that it should have been an airship just like every other FF game but those are mostly story line items as well where it's required at certain points.
In FFXV there is no real story line requirement for flight so they decided to throw in something new in the spirit of the car upgrades. The problem being that the car only goes on the road so you definitely have to take off from and land on roads. The automatic game over was just to ensure people weren't simply flying off wherever and crash landing where they wanted to go then calling for a tow to leave.
