Stuttering even with Special K
So I've installed Special K, configured it to give me consistent frame times, turned off texture caching, but I still get frametime spikes every 20-30 seconds that casuses a really annoying stutter. Anyone experienced this and been able to fix it?

That can have many reasons. Please post your system specs along with the settings you use in-game.

Disabling Geforce Experience did wonders for my fps and stuttering. You need to log into the Geforce Experience application, go to settings and turn off the overlay (video catpure, screenshot, ect).

just so you know, i got very stable FPS here. untouched game. no mods. as u can see here on my testaccount: 8700K, 1070, 16GB Ram

and before i forget, i get huge laggs and stutter with Special K. for most people it causes issues. and sadly most people dont realize that this is the main reason for their problems.

i7-8700K
GTX 1080TI
64GB RAM

I play with all gameworks turned off, and turn down the TRAM setting to average to avoid the huge stutters caused by texture streaming. The game itself runs at a smooth 90fps at 1440p, but every several seconds a massive frametime spike will occur whether Noctis is moving or not. At first I thought it was just DRM checks, but I don't know.

the only real difference between us both is, well there is none. u got a better GPU and more RAM. 1070 and 16GB RAM is, as u saw in the video, very much enough to play maxed out without nvidia stuff. TRAM on max btw. all fine here.

maybe your HDD causes stutters, cause the game cant load fast enough from it? if you got FFXV installed on a SSD. dont mind this part. then i assume your windows is causing issues. feel free to add me. i can give u help with that and how i adjusted windows 10.

Try turning off V-sync from in-game menu and turn on v-sync on and tripple buffering on from Nvidia panel instead. Also, running borderless windows somewhat alibiated this issue for me.

Do you realize you have insane CPU to just be playing @60fps ? Saying a 8700k is able to play this game ultra smooth at those fps means nothing in this case.

The OP is aiming for 90 fps.

(note, i'm judging by the video you posted)

OP said "The game itself runs at a smooth 90fps at 1440p, but every several seconds a massive frametime spike will occur whether Noctis is moving or not." i just wanted to show him that there are no framespikes in normal cases. he has the same CPU and a better GPU even. when i uncap , also got 90-100 fps. the frames drop to 70-80 while moving around and fighting. but no spikes or stutters at all and since he has better hardware, something else is wrong. probably some OS or RAM problem. most likely some XMP stability problem. I get problems with XMP enabled.

alright, point taken.

Wouldn't be better to lock the frame rate below your maximum? This would able to avoid the big fluctuations.

Since i have a very weak/acient cpu (i5 3450), special k helped a lot increase the lower bound / stability of my framerate.

i find it very comfortable to play at 60 FPS. Also Nioh where 60 is max. If the game is not a First Person Shooter, imo there is no need for more. sure it looks a bit smoother with like 100 FPS, but Nioh especially changed my mind to this ^^. But of course going for 300+ FPS only in cs go xD.

OP´s spikes will stay even he changes to 60 FPS cap i would assume carefully. it seems his system "hang" frequently. not a real "performance" issue, it is rather a real system problem.

Nice performance. Are you by chance using a non-60hz monitor? I'd love to be able to cap my frames to 60, but on my 144hz display 60fps looks very choppy. Hence my goal of 90.

i am actually playing on my TV with a 60hz connection through HDMI but the panel is native 100hz refreshing. it looks smooth nevertheless. but i know what u mean.

I also got a 144hz monitor, and surely you are right. having FPS closer to this refreshrate looks smoother, but i wont aim for this. you need to get used to it imo ^^. as i said, Nioh changed my mind. great experience with 60 FPS cap.

you can cap your FPS to 60 in the "Display" option in FFXV. or you can use "MSI Afterburner" to do it.

Wouldn’t setting my refresh rate to 60hz in Nvidia CP in theory make my game feel smoother at the 60fps cap? As it is now, 60fps is so jittery and jaggy that I can hardly play at all.

the faster refresh rate still comes with a "clearer" picture. thats why i mentioned the native 100hz refresh rate from my TV panel. it is much better compared to my last TV.

dont get me wrong right?! ^^ . it is always a subjective experience if you feel that 60 fps is crap or not. BUT if it is insane "jittery and jaggy" like u said, there is something wrong. cause imo 60 fps looks VERY OKAY on a 144 hz monitor ^^.

No. Capping the game to 60 fps in game while playing using a 144hz monitor is not OK. Some games works perfectly and looks amazing capped....but for some reason ff15 when capped at 60 looks horrible on 144hz panel
