Gray Screen Crashes

So I bought this game and I'm trying to run it, but I'm having that oh so common Gray Screen Crash. I haven't reached the main menu, so I haven't been able to make a save file, so I don't have a Final Fantasy XV Save Folder in my My Documents\My Games folder for me to edit a GraphicsConfig.ini file.

What are some other solutions to this problem that people have tried and had success with?

Try running the 2 VCRedist 2015 packages included inside the game's folders. Does the game startup at all for you? Does it crash during loading before the main menu or does the game never even display anything?

it crashes after starting first i have black screen then grey ,black again and then crash

I see ... me too ... but only full screen mode ...try windowed mode for playng ...

If installing the VCRedist 2015 packages in the game's folder didn't help at all you could try creating the GraphicsConfig.ini file manually. Just create a next text document named GraphicsConfig.ini and paste it into:

C:\Users\XXXXX\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XV\Steam\XXXXXXX\savestorage

Then you can paste this code inside the text document:

Adjust the settings accordingly for your rig and your native monitor resolution but "HardwareFullScreenMode=0" is the one you want to make sure you set for the Borderless Window mode. The rest of the stuff you should be able to adjust in game if you can get to the Main Menu after that.

I have to test more time, but try to deactivate all overlay program you have while you execute the game (steam overlay, reshade or whatever...). This also include to deactivate nvidia ansel through nvidia inspector app.

I think you can just change "HardwareFullScreenMode=0" to "HardwareFullScreenMode=1" and it gives you borderless window mode. Solved my grey screen crashes and not had once since.

@Maverik770 As it stands I can't get to the title screen. Just flickers black/gray, and then tells me its not working.

Trying the Redist packages right now, but how is the GraphicsConfig.ini edit supposed to help me when there's no folders for it? The game only creates those folders if you hit the title screen, which I can't do. I said that in my intro post to this discussion. :(

Ok, Im sitting in the same boat as you guys, and the general consensus seems to be: too old CPUs... (im sitting on Phenom II 955 BE)..
what are your specs?

While it was the demo version and not the full game. I followed the advice in this video and got it working. Was having the same problem as OP.

In a different thread I've been informed that AMD Phenom is not supported.

Ahhh, sorry I did not realize the folders weren't even there. Technically you could create the folders manually. Are you running a Phenom chip? If so, yeah, that could be the issue. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. :(

Hey, you lead me to find out how the numbers were generated, and I made the folders thanks to someone in a different thread. And yeah, I was told that the AMD Phenom isn't supported, which is what I'm running.

My pleasure, my friend. I'm glad I could offer some assistance. I'm sad to hear that's the case for you. I was and still am a big fan of the Phenom chips. They perform way better than they really should, even now days. It's a huge disappoint to hear that the game can't even startup properly on a Phenom chip. That just seems strange and silly to me. I could understand if it ran poorly on the chip, sure, it's not a "supported" chip but it can't even boot?

Must be something to do with how the game handles it's threads. I wish something could be done for you to enjoy the game. Maybe something will come along to fix this scenario. I'd suggest now as a decent time to look into a new chip such as Ryzen or some of the Intel offerings but DDR4 RAM is so over priced irght now... You will pay almost as much for some DDR4 RAM as you will for a decent cpu + mobo combination.

I'm on an AMD FX-6350 chip which is also aging quickly and pretty weak overall. I have been dying to jump up to Ryzen but with DDR4 prices where they are I just can't justify it right now.
