FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION

FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION

Possible Crash Fix
Update: Nevermind. I have the crash again with the same error. (July 13th, 2020)

I got tired of the game crashing even though I have a good gaming rig. It crashes randomly, whether it was a few mins in or after an hour or so. I've been reading on how to fix the crash but it just didn't work. The problem that I have, possibly all others as well, is the nvwgf2umx.dll file. I've finally looked at the Event Viewer (never looked until a few days ago), and this file was the culprit for ALL my crashes.

I did some research about the file and some say it's GeForce Experience (close it), graphic drivers need to be updated or rollback, or the game installation needs to be verified. But I did all of those things, and it still crashes.

So, here's the potential fix, as I have not crash since (been playing hours at a time and no crashes). It's still a small sample size, but I want everyone that have crash issues to do this to verify if it works:

1) Play the game and wait for the crash.

Go to the Event Viewer:
a) Type Event Viewer at the search bar or in your windows setting.
b) Go to Windows Log --> Application
c) There should be an error. Click on it. Mine reads for the first 2 lines:

Faulting application name: ffxv_s.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5e467326
Faulting module name: nvwgf2umx.dll, version: 27.21.14.5167, time stamp: 0x5f022459

d) If nvwgf2umx.dll appears on the 2nd line, then this guide will apply to you. If not, at least you know what the crash is.

2) Go to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_edab19158bdd0d0a

3) Copy the nvwgf2umx.dll file.

4) Go to your FF 15 installation folder for Steam.
The default is [Driver Letter]:\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XV

5) Paste the nvwgf2umx.dll file in that game installation folder.

6) Reboot and play the game again to see if it still crashes. I am curious if it works.

I've been playing the game with TRAM setting on Highest and everything ON including TuffEffects, HDR, and DLSS to see if it crashes and so far no crashes.

Good Luck!

My setup:
i9-9900KS CPU
32 GB RAM
NVIDIA 2080 Ti Video Card
NVMe SSD 1TB, SSD 1 TB, Mechanical 6 TB
Water Cooling

Note: I might have to do this copying every time there's a graphics update because the nvwgf2umx.dll file does change with every new graphics update.

Opinion: I'm assuming the nvwgf2umx.dll file was supposed to be in the game installation folder, but it got deleted or moved? Not sure. There might be even a file that is looking for this file but the path is wrong and just needs to be updated. Just my thought.

im going to give this a go, just followed your guide. Had the same error
25 minutes is all I got... =/ just going to uninstall this game again, was excited that stutter was dramatically reduced, now the crashes I never had before.
Thx for trying.
np, thanks for the suggestion though
Nevermind. I just got the crash with the same error. Sigh....
yeah it sucks, i couldn't take the awful stutters a year ago, came back the other day, and now crashes. Cannot win with this game lol
second that
Ok so what fixed that .dll crash was turning off turf effects, shadowlib and vxao. Kinda crap turning nvidia eye candy off to not crash considering I'm using a 2080ti. Oh also turned tram to high. I dont think this was the fix but I also went back to windows 1909 from 2004, and nvidia driver to the one prior to the death stranding game ready one.
Been playing for hours, slowly going to turn on nvidia eye candy to narrow down the culprit
I didn't want to comment until I have more data, but it seems DLSS is causing the crashes. I've been trying different graphics settings with DLSS on, and it crashes every time.

So far, I've been using TAA instead of DLSS, with everything ON and Highest (TRAM included) and no crashes. Been playing hours on 4 occasions now, but so did last time. I'm gonna hold judgment until I have more data/proof.

Are you using DLSS? If not and still crashing, then I have no idea. Maybe I'm just getting lucky with those few occasions. If you are, then trying going to TAA/FXAA and see if it crashes.

DLSS gives me more frames/performance, but I'd rather play a game with no crashes. With DLSS, I get about 60 to 80 fps; 40 to 60 fps with TAA.

Yes im using dlss, so far it seems turfworks is the culprit...turned back on the other nvidia stuff and haven't crashed for hours...turfworks is the only thing off, aside from god awful motion blur, and tram set to high
I went back to DLSS for your setting (TRAM = High, TurfEffects = Off) and it crashed about 5 mins of use. Went back to TAA and TRAM to Highest and TurfEffects On and haven't crashed yet. It seems like there are different fixes on different setups. It's unfortunate I can't use DLSS.

Using Windows 10 2004 and latest NVIDIA driver 451.67.

That is unfortunate, yeah i rolled back windows 2004 to 1909 and nvidia driver to 451.48
