I think the series already goes backwards in terms of quality. Graphics get better, but the quality sure don't...
The Final Fantasy series is unusual, in that SquareEnix goes through the effort of creating an entirely new *universe* with every mainline entry. In a sense, each Final Fantasy is not only a different story, but a different *everything*, including combat, mechanics, magic system, etc.
There are some common themes and names, like chocobos
The variety is one of the greatest strengths of the Final Fantasy series. I've seen some people say Final Fantasy XV is their favorite out of all of them, while other people say it's the worst one out of all of them. Different people have different tastes.
I, personally, think XV is top 3, and I've played them all. If you love story and lore, the well goes deep in XV. Here's how all the movies/books/DLCs outside the main game fit together if you want to dive in the deep end:

The two absolute essentials are Kingsglaive before Chapter 1, and Brotherhood after Chapter 1.
The movie is a great addition, but not needed. :) It's there as an option. You play how you want to play. No wrong moves. We're all bros here.
However, if you are looking to get into the FF series in general i highly recommend starting with FF10 as i do think it is the best starting point for newbies. FF15 doesnt do a good job at explaining what the series really is whilst FF10 definitely does.
Still it's good enough for 1 playthrough. Glad I didn't pay full price for this game.
I haven't seen anyone put forward 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 11, or 13 as their favorite. I'd love to hear it, though, if someone reading this considers one of them as their favorite.
It's pretty amazing when more than half of the time a new Final Fantasy ends up as someone's favorite and #1 out of all 15.
I missed out on 1 myself initially. I tried replaying this but for me it didnt age well. I might have finished 1, I cant remember. 2 had weird mechanics and I lost interest. 3 I never got around to trying.
4 was my first and i liked it. Fighters were fighters, casters were casters, and no 9999 madness all ov er.
5 was somewhat special to me because I had borrowed a Game Doctor from a friend which lets you play roms/disks on a real snes. so we'd get the translated patches and me and friend take turns playing it all night. Its on my list to replay some day, but this is sorta the beginning of the end where everyone can do everything. Fighters cast for 9999, mages punch for 9999, etc.
6 had good story but really besides a few skills per person, it got a bit dry with everyone OP.
7 even less mechanics, just put materia into everyones stuff.
8 is an odd one. I didnt want to wait for US release so I played the Japanes and didnt grasp the story. gameplay is annoying with the draw system. i have actually seen a few claim this is their favorite. it is unique in that bosses do not give xp, so you can actually beat the game without leveling up. Now 99% of the time that would be hard and a challenge however 8 is interesting in that monsters scale with you, so by staying lvl 7 or whatever you actually become more OP than if you actual leveled to 100. Also 100 was max i think, not 99, so weird...
9 tried to bring back the medieval fantasy. I played it and dont remember anything other than it felt like I was playing Dragon Ball Z.
10 was good, replayed the Ps4 release, still fun.
10-2, no thanx.
11. I tried it once and it was rough. I hadnt played mmo's before but basically moves had crazy stuff like 10 or 20 minute cooldowns, i had to use all my skills to kill a sheep, and then to heal naturally it took something like 40 minutes. Very rough. I wouldnt mind playing it now with more knowledge.
12 I liked, same, got the ps4 rerelease and played that.
13... I forced myself through it, its just got bad pacing and gating. 13-2 i played that too and it felt more like pokemon or something.
13-3, no no no. an rpg that penalizes you for exploring?
14 Ive played on and off, its good.
15. I dunno, missing a lot to me.
Im a big fan that started with 15 so i dont really have any nostalgia tied to the series apart from seeing advent children as a kid and i would say my favourite would be FF10 and FF7 Remake. FF15 does hold a special place in my heart though because without it i would never have went back to older FF games.
Part of the reason I like 15 so much is because it reminds me of when I tried to start the original FF with a party of 4 Thieves just so I could eventually get a party of 4 Ninjas! LOL, 5th graders... Anyway, 15 feels like I finally got my party of 4 ninjas! (Especially felt that way after watching Kingsglaive...) Of course we all dress in black! That's what ninjas do! ;o)
