Pretty much broken on Steam, while perfect on Origin and Windows Store. Get them on those platforms if you want, I doubt we'll be getting any updates here.
And yet, I've logged 45 some odd hours since buying the game on the 20th and have only had 1 crash and am well into the endgame content (including beating all of the character DLC episodes including Ardyn).
OP: Pick the game up while it's still on sale and give it a try... maybe you'll be like me and won't have any issues... and if not... it's only $20. Surely you've spent more than that on things that didn't didn't work.
I'm running an Alienware Alpha R1 with an I3 4130T, 8GB of RAM, 860M video (basically a 750Ti) and a 500GB SSD. I've been playing at 1080p with Average settings @ 30FPS without issue.
I finished the game some time ago as soon as it came out with a GTX 770, an i5 4670, 8gb of ram and a HDD (so no SSD) and didn't have many problems.
Latest updates broke the game for me and now I can't even play it smoothly on GTX 1060...
The demo is based on an older version of the game and is not a good indicator of performance. You'll want to get the full game and get to Chapter 3. If you can get to that point, you should be able to gauge the game's overall performance.
This is what angers me the most. Both the demo and the official FFXV Benchmark cannot be trusted. The demo runs as smooth as butter on my system and the Benchmark gives me something like 6500 points, stating that I would be able to play with high preset and Nvidia turf + Nvidia hairworks without issues. If I try to set the game with the suggested settings my pc literally explodes. Only game that does that.
This is fake news. lol... Im not sure why everyone and their mom thinks this is true, its been circling for ages now that steam is broken and it works fine everywhere else, which is not the case. Users from other platforms are also having issues.
The whole FFXV Reddit and even a video here on steam prove you wrong, so have fun believing what you want.
The game doesn't suffer from the heavy stutters-freezes that happen very frequently on the steam version.

Probably depends just how sensitive one is to to frame pacing issues as well, not just actual micro-stuttering. Like on the PS4/Pro I noticed the frame pacing being off a lot, when I normally don't find such all that bothersome. On the PC (for me) I think I notice it a little occasionally but it's nothing like it was on console.
Also, all the start of combat animation loading (like when you call for a Tech) may cause a very minor hitch/frame delay occasionally. Not all the time. Maybe cache related. Happened on console too. Swapping the bro's on the PS4/Pro was very frame-hitchy in my experience and that long delay was worse. Probably more noticeable if one is also trying to record video while playing too.
Having 4k pack installed (you don't have to play in 4k, just install it) may help in some cases.
The memory leaks have been around since day 1 for some people. Again, random luck and I think it's not all that common. But it's not like I have access to stats from all the 100's of thousands of players who bought the game on Steam, so ...
Since Steam has a refund policy, the only advice I could give is to buy it (since it's cheap now) and start a rush game to Chapt. 3 (since you already played it) which is possible within 2 hrs I think, and see how it performs there. If it's bad, refund it. If it seems fine, play. ;)
have a 2080, had gpu memory usage at 99 % (and soon after that crash) even with tram turned to average- now it seems to not get higher than 60% and that seems ok so far
tried with and without 4k textures did not make a diffenrence for me by the way (performancewise)
about judging the performance from the demo- i had no memeory eak while playing the demo snd in the full game i had it -so i think you can't judge from playing the demo
