Is he optional? If not how do I beat him?

I was able to beat him, first try. I think when you get his health low enough you'll be able to summon to finish the battle. Pretty sure that's how it worked for me.

make sure that you do the quest with Cor before, he will help you then.

He's easy Baneewii, be sure to keep your dodge button pressed at all times, there's only 1 or two attacks that you can't dodge that way. The objective, is to get counter prompts and attack him, plus, Warp Strike him whenever he runs away to the walls ;)

get some fire protection m8. there is a food that makes you 100% resist to fire. that will help durring that fight.

blocking his attacks leads to openings plus you have the kings super power on your side so just smash attack until the circle is full and let rip until last second and use the group attack.

P.S. If you're having issues with the dog you wont like what comes after him, I'd advice some grinding and accessory/weapon upgrades regardless just because you made this post.

Quintcast Blizzara him to death and have Ignis use Enchantment to coat your blade in frost . Like for real, he's insanely weak to frost being a tri-headed hellhound that breathes fire and all. That's literally how I beat him Blizzara Quintcast>Enhancement>Sword attacks>Repeat.
