The 4 bro's are a package deal, it's about their friendship bond as well as the main "story."
Also, you always control Noctis (you can switch between characters if you get certain upgrades, but only during combat).
...they can seem annoying initially but you either get to ignore them/they don't annoy anymore, they grow on you, or they become your fave chr. ever. If the game did one thing well, imo, it was the relationships between the bro's. Even when they do something that ticked me off, I still appreciated they could tick me off, if that makes sense.
But Ignis still best bro. :D
Actually this is one of the things sacrificed to get those high res textures. More characters = more gfx work
