I don't understand the going to past
I reached chapter 9 and I am at the part in which I just got the call umbra ability at a hotel in altissa and after that I need to negotiate with the Secretary

If i call umbra then I go back in time and i am in lucis. I don't get why I have to go back in time so I go back to lucis. Can I stay in the present and I go by boat from altissa to lucis?

Also if i am in the past in lucis then can I go by boat to altissa? I got a message saying I can use the royal boat. If yes then can I continue the game or I can't because I am in the past and I need to be in present altissa and not past altissa

Well... take "past" and present" for now as just teleportation, you will understand later in the game

But yes, you can take a boat and swim to Lucis

The Royal Boat was added with the Royal / Windows Edition of FF XV

As have been said, it's just a teleport thing. According to the game, it let's you relive past memories of Lucis. Doesn't explain why you can do things you didn't do in the past or bring items back and forth with you, but don't overthink it. It's just there so you're not boned once you depart Cape Caem.

I am confused. I can stay in present and go to lucis or I can go back to past and go to lucis

What about the side quests and hunts from now on? Are they the same in past and present? Or they are different depending on when I am?

For example when I just got back to the past Cindy called me and she told me about the earthquakes. Would that have happened if i stayed in present and I went by boat to lucis?

Don't overthink it, the simplest way to say it : So you can return to the open world portion of the game to finish quest and things you haven't did (there's a new quest and hunt too after you finish the game)

The quest is the same and always carry on your progress, there's no different about PAST and PRESENT, like above said, it's just a matter of teleportation

It's funny now that they added the boat and you can travel back to Lucis, as the characters there act like if you were on "the past" and never left for Altissia.

Using the Boat is a new thing added to the PC and Reyal eidtion.
Before it once you got to Alticia you culd not normaly go back to the Open world.
So its basily its just the boat dlc and the orignal games option coliding.
Once you finish Chapter 9 thou you will no logner have acsses to the boat so using the dog is only option.

Yes, it's just them adding the boat later and not changing anything else to accommodate it. Similar things happen with a particular upgrade to the Regalia, where new map markers can't be removed and later cut scenes forget that the upgrade happened. It's disappointing that the developers couldn't make a more polished product, but that's something you have to accept in general with this game.

What i wonder is how far past you can go. Go to altissia > travel byb oat to lucis > call umbra > go to past altissia> repeat

Are you going to end up riding a dinosaur at some point?

To put it as simply as possible, you travel between the dark world and the normal world without losing a single thing in the transition between the two.
It's just a game mechanic, don't overthink the logistics of it, they don't make sense.

This was put in as insurance so that in the last segment of the game that puts you in a very linear part, you can go back to Lucis and level up, get supplies, etc.

It's very disappointing that they decided to not make the second continent explorable and enable you to level up that way, but lock you in for the rest of the game into cutscenes and boss fights. Until the post game.

The characters aren't traveling to the past - you're technically experiencing past memories that you haven't played through already. The items that carry over illogically are just a convenient gameplay contrivance that requires suspension of disbelief.

Idk, it made sense to me because after lunafreya gets killed by ardyn, noctis is really pissed and focused and the whole journey takes on a darker tone and he becomes more singleminded in his quest to stop the daemons. so it makes sense for it to get more linear on from there
