What do you mean no visual progression?
Clothing does get more and more dirty the longer you postpone sleeping in camps or inns.
You can also unlock a few outfits for the main character (noctis) by playing through the campaign.
You can also unlock 1 new outfit for each of his 3 companions by doing the DLC.

The tough guy, the super non-manly guy, the smart guy that uses big words, and the disaffected emo youth serving as our protaganist, betrothed to some model because he's inheriting lots of money and stuff.
Although generally speaking, this has served the genre well since Speed Racer. not that there is anything wrong with that. I'd go for a Chim-Chim as the car driver, though. He'd probably do better.
I would say since FF VII and up the clothing has been more Japanese inspired than western. VIII was a good example of that, I mean Zell looks just like Prompto in terms of clothing design and who would ever wear that jackety Squall had?
True. Seifer however had a very cool coat. I believe that the japanese style bumps from really cool to really ridiculous.
