The renderscale affects all post processing effects and will speed up performance.
Vsync doesn't affect performance that much but you should only use it if you are steady above 30 or 60 fps. If your fps is between 50-60 for example, vsync will force it to 30fps. (i think)
...have you SEEN how much better the monster hair and fur looks with Hairworks enabled? Have you SEEN how much better the grass looks with Turfworks enabled?
Chrissake, if by 'gimmicks' you mean 'makes the game look better', then okay.
Honestly, turfworks is only nice in Duscae. Everywhere else it's pretty meh. I've seen Skyrim grass mods that look better. From my own game in fact...

Hairworks really does look crazy but my poor little computer can't handle that, unless I want to play at 30 fps with drops in fights and I don't.
Antialasing also is good to experiment with; the higher resolution you have, the less you need it. But they have been saying that for years and years and it never seems to change--it always looks better to some people and others always say to turn it off.
I suggest you turn AA off and then work upwards from there; that can help. for me it gave me about 10fps when I disabled it.
