It was trought Dawn of the future was the way to unlock 'alternate universe' on Insomnia event on the Tabata timeline. This is the expected final and happy ending, as the main game is pretty a bad ending. Bahamut is the only who desired Noctis and Ardyn dead, so they need to defeat him it to happend.

All S2 but Episode Ardyn got cancelled.
In Episode Ardyn, at the end you're given a dialogue choice. One of them is for the main game storyline arc, the other was supposed to be an intro/set up for Ep. Noctis' alternate path ending. Which you now have to read the book for.
It's pretty lame. What they did re: DLC etc I mean, not the book, I haven't read the book.
I'm still glad that I played it, and finished it, it's not a bad game, and not a bad ending, but I wouldn't have been rushing to buy DLC for it. That said, I don't think it's fair for the fans to cancel announced DLC. If you announce something, you should already be working on it, and if you're already working on it, don't waste the time and money already spent on it, and the only way to get that back is to sell copies of it (IE: Finish the DLC).
I'm pretty sure that that's exactly what happened to Ardyn, he was consumed by the enormity of his "blessing", nobody is so "pure" that they can carry that much "darkness" and not be "corrupted" by it. I'm also of the belief that what little of his "sanity" or "soul" that reminded only desired to finally be at rest, but since he was "immortal", there was only one way for that to happen - Noctis (And Luna). Which is why he "helps" you, not the petty revenge that he tells you (and probably tells himself).
PS: Anybody else find it amusing that their names are Night and Moon?
