The update that causes the constant micro freezing (+ FIX)
I've been messing with the Steam depot trying all the updates and I found that the last game version without issues is the July 10, 2018, I think is 1.25. On the next update from August 9, 2018 appears the micro freezing. It makes sense cause the one from August is a PC only update, and for what I can read on other threads, the issue only happens on PC and only on Steam version. Now what we have to discover is what has this update that can cause the issue. I will contact with SE support telling this, but I don't know if they are gonna make something.

A possible fix for the ones annoyed by the constant freezing is revert the game to July 10, 2018 version downloading the needed files from the Steam depot. It's very easy, if there's people interested I will explain. I know that it's not a solution for all cause it makes that you have to begin the game from the start (the saves are not compatible with previous versions), or maybe lost some extras, but I think is the best solution by now (better than buy another copy on other store).

How to roll back to the last game version without the issue:

1. Right click on your Steam shortcut, click properties and add -console after Steam target.

2. Launch Steam and click on console, you can see it on top menus. Type the following line (copy and paste to avoid mistakes) and press enter:

download_depot 637650 637651 8904421868518945116 7368819816363508111

It will begin to download the package and it will be on your Steam/steamapps/content folder. It's about 17gb. You can check your Steam download section to make sure your network is downloading the package. When the dowload is complete you will recieve a message on console.

3. Copy the content of the depot_637651 folder to your game folder and replace files. Now you have the game on 1.25 and without micro freezing issue. You can launch the game as normal.

4. To avoid auto update click on game properties, updates and select "Only update this game when I launch it".

5. If one day there's an update pending and, like in this case, you don't want to update, at least by now, what you have to do is open a file called "appmanifest_637650.acf" (with Notepad), that will be on Steamapps folder where you have installed the game and replace whatever number that will be on "StateFlags" line with "4", this means "updated and installed". Make it with Steam closed.

Downgraded to 1.25, no problems after loading in (usually stutters as soon as you move around) did not stutter running around hammerhead or across the landscape or even in combat, even at 2:15 in the video when Prompto takes a picture it did not stutter/freeze the game. Previously on the latest version of ffxv I had to play this game on average settings on a 1060 because the performance was terrible, now i'm able to play without issue on the high preset. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this

Good to see so many people are really voicing this issue, keep it up guys! It will be a shame if the game is left like this forever. What will we have to wait 10 years until we all get the next, next gen super computer of 2030 before it finally freaking runs right? Come on Square/Steam/Whoever can fix this!!!!

the problem with the stuttering issue is i dont think even super duper future hardware will help, i think its engine related which is worst because you cant brute force it.

but dont get your hopes up it probably wont get fixed, nier automata was never fixed and all future development on ff15 has been halted so probably no one is working on it anymore.

Yeah I am not holding out for it. I know the game worked just fine for me up until about a year ago, because I had 165 hours of playtime up until it started acting up. I'm gonna try what this thread suggests with rolling back the patch. If that doesn't work, eventually I'll have to buy the Origin version of the game during the winter sale and try that.

I copy/pasted the command line into the steam console but it just shows up in red on the console and says assertion failed. I wonder why? nothing downloads. :/

I've just tried and no problem with that.

Thanks for the reply. It happened because i copy/pasted it twice. It did say it was dowloading after all. Just have to wait for it to finish. :)

Downgraded to the 1.25 version as stated above, overall I received a 10 FPS loss. But the random stuttering and freezing stopped in and out of combat. I'd take the loss over the stuttering any day.

16GB

I'm currently downloading the 1.25 patch. I have noticed that Episode Ardyn runs flawlessly for me with maxed out settings. No stutters or hitches. But the main game of course is screwed. Won't be able to play Episode Ardyn of course, once I install 1.25. So I'm getting it out of the way first.

I think there's no fps loss. From demo to last version I didn't appreciate any reasonable fps gain. Anyway, measure fps in this game is complex, you can run the same test 3 times in a row and on each run it gives you a different result.

I mean we can clearly see ur sttuttering, its not unplayable but far from solid.

Is it just the datas folder from the depot 637651 folder, that I need to copy/paste into the directory? I also have build info, key config, and the ffxv application. Just throw it all in? Or just the datas folder? Sorry, just wanna make sure I do this right, really excited that it might actually become playable again!

It should be the datas folder, buildinfo.txt, keyconfig and ffxv.exe, just know that if you do update to the latest version again and then go back to the old version your save wont be compatible again so its best to keep latest and 1.25 saves separate

I'm having issues with this. I installed the 1.25 patch, but when I copy/pasted the datas folder, it asked me if I wanted to replace the files, I selected yes. But it seemed it didn't actually replace them. It just added them. I launched the game, old save files of my level 65 character still load. Game has no stutter or hitches, but the graphics seem off. Trees disappear with camera movements, and the High settings look like low. :/

I'm trying again to install it correctly but damn, I hate to look like an idiot but i must have misunderstood a step. I know one thing, I'm gonna pick up the Origin version of this game during the Winter sale. Grr. If anyone can help me understand step by step how to place the datas folder, would be appreciated. I feel like it's just copy/paste into the directory, but it doesn't seem to be working for me. :/

You can't use current saves if you roll back the patch, it isn't properly supported. You have to start over.
