Honor Roll Achievement?

For the Honor Roll achievement, you have to get 3 Gold medals with each species right?

Does that mean that you have to start a new game 8 times in order to make a new Avatar character? Is there a way to change your avatar species without restarting?

I'm not all the way through the story so maybe you can recruit different guys later?

Am I missing something?

Finish the game first, then worry about the Honor Roll Achievements.

After beating the game, the game lets you create more avatars for you to play with.

I think you only have to get 1 gold medal for the achievement on each but there are in-game missions for getting 3 on each.
