Vulcan
So I am super looking forward to Heavy metal In just a few days. But just one thing. What exactly is the point of the Vulcan? It is designed as an anti infantry Mech. There are no infantry in the game. What exactly is going to be the point of this thing? They all supposedly have a quirk. Anyone know what the Vulcan quirk is? Infantry targets for it to shoot would have been cool too.

Packs a bunch of support weapons - it's quirk is that all it's support weapons get extra range so you do not need to get close to use them
Also if you equip it with Small Coil weapons ( Support ) it should be fairly lethal since it is fast

Doesn't it have some kind of melee defense too?

Yes I believe you are correct - it is hard to hit with a melee attack

Small lasers are support weapons, and they're extremely efficient weapons when they're in range. If you're mounting a bunch of them on something that can consistently get into range, yeah that's no joke.

The 2T version was always questionable in tabletop. Was hearing that the 5T variant will be available - yanks the AC/2 for 3 medium lasers and additional heat sinks. With it's perk support weapons will be better but I wan't to see just how much further they shoot. Real question is, will they shoot far enough to prevent an assault mech from physically tearing the Vulcan limb from limb? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Well by the original rules/lore customization was rare, there was none of the mech lab style stuff. So a lot of the "worst" mechs were the worst available, but due to their niche nature were still available as the best had suffered a lot of attrition during the wars.

So a lot of situational mechs wound up being front line mechs (like both the firestarter and vulcan which were often supplementary units rather than core line mechs... meaning they were added to the command lance as an extra unit for tactical purposes)

Oh yeah, the Vulcan. The one that looks like a TOS Klingon cruiser. I would imagine we'll get the base model, plus the mike variant- as they're commonly fielded by Marik.

What the stock model looks like - lore wise - is a mech that fulfills the role of both urban warfare ("...designed as an anti-infantry 'Mech in 2775 during the closing years of the Amaris Civil War") and anti-air, sort of an urban variant of the Blackjack.

Like a lot of mechs that use MGs, as the current version of this game stands, they are kind of useless from a cost/benefit standpoint. I just cored a J-mech in the first round by touching off its AC/2 ammo, and I've done similar to heavies with MGs, like the stock T-bolt. So to put both on a medium? Say hello to the scrap yard, especially in low skull missions where you're meeting enemies with the shoddy debuff.

However, what it does look like is in the role of light mech hunter or recon - its about as fast as a Commando or Jav - but with a better jump range than the Jenner. Depending on its hardpoints, you could make a pretty effective hunter/killer, so long as you punch under your weight class.

(or maybe they're doing a run-up to introducing infantry?)

Oh it boats support guns? Then maybe I have a use for it after all. I am actually fairly fond of boating MG and critseeking for headshots. Taking that one point off means I can spam 60 damage long guns all day until I get headcaps. I typically run a lance full of AC10 and PPC with one light boating MG with ace pilot to set up the headcaps and spot. I was doubting the usefulness of the Vulcan but it sounds like I have uses for it after all.

And yah infantry would be cool as Urbies in silly hats, but I doubt we will ever see it unless they do a Battletech 2.

I was thinking you could moint a couple of the new Coil small support weapons - since the Vulcan is quite fast it should be able to get quite a few evasion points on flat ground/pavement - not as useful in rough terrain

Small: 2 tons, 4 slots, 15 damage per evasion (SUPPORT WEAPON)
Medium: 3 tons, 6 slots, 25 damage per evasion
Large: 4 tons, 8 slots, 35 damage per evasion
All versions have heat equal to half the damage.

With a good pilot 6 chevrons evasion that would be 90pts damage each (plus extra range ) 180 damage - yes 90 heat so run away and cool before firing again?

It was something like a wopping -75% reprisal melee attack damage as its quirk but I did not catch its own melee bonus. I still don't like the idea of running around with virtually no armour though. Was hoping for a front arc evasion buff.

It will give players more options at a medium melee mech. The melee defense should be pretty sweet too!.

sure, until it fails you anyway and the thing gets pounded into the dirt in one hit by a banshee or something.

If your getting hit by a banshee in melee with a Medium Brawler your doing it wrong.. You need to use your pilots with MOVE after attack. A melee medium can get two hits on a banshee and get away with out any worry of attack.

It's going to be a good mech for crit seeking and overheating mechs, specially considering the MG's and flamers are going to basicly have medium laser range, so don't need to be very close to crit seek/overheat an enemy mech. So the support weapons are going to be just as dangerous at srm/med laser ranges.
