Now that would be IRON URBAN MECH mode.
Chris
When used well they can be devastating for their weight class. When used poorly they are merely trash can shaped speed bumps on the way to victory.
Either way they should be in the game. Especially in missions when the AI is defending fixed locations with turrets and bases. That is their specialty role and for them not to be doing that is just sad.
Chris
They were used primarily as defensive mechs. Meaning every single planet that had something to defend probably received Urban Mechs. Other light mechs are considered to useful to be stuck on defense missions and were given to regular line units instead of purely defensive Militia or National or Planetary Guard units.
In terms, Front line units get the M1 Abrams, guard units get M60. Or frontline units get a T72, militia units get a T55 or older T34.
The Urban mech would be the goto light mech in the Periphery for planetary defense. It should be the single most seen mech if you are attacking anything in the Periphery. At least 33% of all light mechs not being used as offensive mechs should be Urban mechs. Then 1 in 10 of the urban mechs should be the nasty AC 20 variant.
We have seen zero Urban mechs. Statistically not possible based on the canon and lore of the Inner Sphere and periphery for this timeline.
Easily fixed once the game comes out and the modders get ahold of this.
Chris
In skirmish the AI would leave the Urban Mechs in the back and they would snipe and could kill light mechs rather easily.
Still would like to see them in, rather than just absent completely.
Chris
More the latter than the former. They aren't useless, but the average light mech in TL1 probably has a 6 walking speed and 9 running speed, the faster ones are 7/11 or 8/12. The Urbanmech has a speed of 2/3. For comparison an Atlas has a 3 walking speed and a 5 running speed. In return for effectively being a turret, the Urbanmech fields an AC10, which is a decent weapon. Although, in Tabletop if it swapped the AC10 for a PPC, it would free up enough weight to move up to 5/8 engine without losing any damage and actually gaining some range in addition to the faster movement.
If you can get one in a position where it can't be flanked and it has clear sight lines it can be dangerous. It's other advantage is that it has a low BV and C-bill cost, so if you're playing another player in PvP and you're using C-bills or BV to balance an encounter, you can field a lot of them. Although, personally, I'd rather have a swarm of Locusts. People have killed new players with them, but realistically, because of their horrendous speed, in any match against equally skilled players, they're going to be a liability.
