There are plenty of mechs and variants for this first game. More than previous RTS/TBS Battletech/MechWarrior games had when they first launched.
And the game is very moddable. Modders were already adding new mechs during the beta. Primarily through loadouts and skins. Adding new 3D models with unique animations would be a lot more work and take a lot more time.
Either way we'll see more mechs added to the game. Officially would be the best way because it would mean the game is doing well enough for HBS to continue developing content.
While some mechs might be added as part of free game updated it's probable in success more mechs will be added as part of larger paid campaign expansions.
I hope to not see them added MWO style as mech packs unless they're really affordable and HBS said they won't do microtransations so there's that.
Not many
While for this game a pristine mech would be unique - that isn't what the OP meant by unique.

Thirtysix unique mechs plus variants is a damn good start for the first Battletech video game in ages.

So that's 26 more mechs that could be added officially and would fit with the 3025 timeline. More could be added: if they move further down the timeline, if they give us full lostech 2750 mechs or if the lawsuit gets resolved in Battletech's favor.
I'm sure modders will probably give use all these mechs and more before HBS gets around to it.
I'd love to see someone recreate Cresecent Hawk's Inception in MechWarrior 5.
If PGI haven't made a model there is very little chance of HBS being able to put that mech in game.
And since the HG lawsuit seems to be finished for HBS, we may see some good news about some of the missing emchs.
I know. He could have too by virtue of a search feature or google.
OI don't expect anything about new models for the game until PGI have the lawsuit dismissed with prejudice. Hopefully that will be soon.
