Question...
what Battletech games on Steam are NOT turn based? I haven't played Battletech sense the 90s (Battletech for Sega Genesis released around 1993) and recently found the franchise on Steam. I notice it seems there all turn based now the original was not. Any direction would be appreciated.

when you say the original you do realise that is talking about a Tabletop turn based game, on the PC I would say if you want a continuous game buy Mech warrior 5

Ya, the sega version was a fluke. Battletech has always been turn based or sim like.

Believe the MechAssault games were similar to the Genesis version, but that was it.

Yeah, there is confusion generated by the names Battletech and Mechwarrior. The first is traditionally turn based while the second is a mech robot sim.

The tabletop game was released by an outfit called FASA in 1984 as a set of paper and pen rules with dice for a robot combat game. The developers had access to a warehouse full of tiny, cheap Robotech figures from a Japanese manufacturer that went out of business, and they originally used those toys to populate the game.

The Battletech license got passed around to various developers, which explains why there are different versions of the same property. Right from day one, there were lawsuits to and from FASA regarding the ownership of Battletech, its rules, and its designs. Depending on how those lawsuits went seems to have guided whether or not there would be knock-off or spin-off versions of Battletech available.

I find the lore of BΛTTLETECH to be tedious, but the real-world Jim Belushi-infused legal history of Battletech I find fascinating, go figure.

In addition to Mech Warrior 5(MW5), which is single player you can also check out Mech Warrior Online (MWO) which is an online mech shooter that I think is free to play still. I haven't played it in years.

Can confirm, MWO is still free to play and has a solid fan base. It's an older fan base too, so you wont hear a lot of whining, just a lot of jokes and good sportsmanship. Mostly.
