Idea of CASE is that it stops ammo explosions from reaching other parts of the Mech and more importantly, killing the pilot.
CASE doesn't protect the torso that it is mounted in either. The only thing CASE does is prevent ammo explosion excess damage from being transferred to the center torso. That is it.
Ammo explosions will still damage the torso the ammo is in, but will not transfer excess damage inward as most other excess damage is. Because CASE can only be put in the torsos, this means you are only protecting the center torso by adding CASE.
So, an ammo explosion in the torso will do damage as normal, but not transfer to the CT. An ammo explosion in an arm, will transfer to the attached torso (if there is excessive damage), and do damage to that torso, but any excess damage beyond that will not transfer to the CT.
(Also, all of this is based on us talking about Inner Sphere CASE, not Clan CASE or CASE II)
Does digital BT do this? I've been blowing up the ammo in side torsos for a long time, and I don't recall it ever transferring to the CT. Or maybe I just didn't notice and the ammo was already partially used. But I'm pretty sure I've pre-emptively disarmed Hunchback AC20's by blowing out the ammo before they could fire. /hmm
edit: but since the OP talks about choosing to install CASE, I'll assume he's either playing RT or BTA.
In RT, there are several different kinds of CASE or CASElike. The Inner Sphere model just restricts ammo explosions to the torso, while CASEII reduces the damage to 5 points (and the ammo is destroyed). Safe munitions mimic CASE; a crit only destroys the ammo and its bin without explosion. Clan armor also functions as if CASE were installed. though not CASEII.
