For me, I went pretty far in the campaign, but eventually abandoned it in favor of career games which I prefer.
I'd jump right to the big 3 mods and skip vanilla career outright unless you want to achievement hunt.
It's probably lazy of me to ask and not look it up, but what are the big three mods? I very rarely use mods.. sounds interesting though? Do they really add something to the game?
They're separate major rebuilds, with somewhat different approaches.

due to actions by the Nexus owners some mods are no longer available from nexus I suggest you go to the discord pages and you should find where you can get the mod.
Personally I recommend a good try at vanilla before jumping into mods, least to maybe see how things are different. The mods all offer some new different things, difficulty seems to remain the same since even with some AI updates that should make them stronger, you as a player gain more options which can be used to pound them into the dirt even harder.
I played Campaign several times, but I've also been playing since release, when there wasn't a Career option. ;)
You also have travel restrictions until the campaign missions are all done.
Career mode doesn't have those issues.
:)
I don't feel like the campaign is particularly invasive to the sandbox play, but "to each his own"
