Should I stop Campaign and switch to Career?
I prefer hardcore rogue-like games generally, and the linear plot thing is putting me off a bit. I am about 4 hrs in to the campaign. Should I restart or am I likely to miss important stuff?
What mode do you personally prefer?

Thanks.

I prefer Career. If the story is bothering you, or you feel too constrained, why not start a career mode game? You can always go back to the campaign if you feel like it.

For me, I went pretty far in the campaign, but eventually abandoned it in favor of career games which I prefer.

Story mode is just a story, if the story doesn't interest you you're not missing anything by skipping it. Plus story mode jacks up all the planet difficulty ratings so you'll just end up restarting in career mode anyway once finished.

I'd jump right to the big 3 mods and skip vanilla career outright unless you want to achievement hunt.

Thanks for the advice both.
It's probably lazy of me to ask and not look it up, but what are the big three mods? I very rarely use mods.. sounds interesting though? Do they really add something to the game?

Two are probably Battletech Advanced 3062 and Roguetech. Not sure which the third is, maybe Battletech Extended?

They're separate major rebuilds, with somewhat different approaches.

for advice on choosing a mod read this .

due to actions by the Nexus owners some mods are no longer available from nexus I suggest you go to the discord pages and you should find where you can get the mod.

I found career more interesting than campaign. I'm running it ironman and with settings I want doing what I want, feels like a proper mercenary setup rather than just being politically tied to one faction in particular and set out as their lapdog to do their bidding.

Personally I recommend a good try at vanilla before jumping into mods, least to maybe see how things are different. The mods all offer some new different things, difficulty seems to remain the same since even with some AI updates that should make them stronger, you as a player gain more options which can be used to pound them into the dirt even harder.

The story is just there for people that like that sort of thing. Many people don't like just wandering around doing their own thing and want a story to motivate them. I got tired of the story and never finished it. I have played several career runs.

The campaign is very difficult at certain points i suggest you watch a campaign playthrough before attempting it and it only adds to the career mode giving you more fun content and challenge

If you enjoy the core gameplay loop but dislike the story missions then yes, you should switch to career. If you don't mind the story missions then campaign still provides plenty of randomized content and FPs become available after you complete the final mission.

Plus, the Priority/Story missions are some more variety compared to the random ones. /shrug

I played Campaign several times, but I've also been playing since release, when there wasn't a Career option. ;)

So far, I play campaign and there isn't any rush to complete the story. Meaning you can free roam as you like and once in a while come back to the story mission.

Campaign end-game is all heavy/assault mech enemies, and if you get rep too low with a faction it becomes impossible to recover.
You also have travel restrictions until the campaign missions are all done.

Career mode doesn't have those issues.

I finished campaign recently and found it very enjoyable. I took my time (150 hours or so). As others pointed out (well after the initial bit) you can basically go where you want as well. I don't know whether these are there anyway but campaign seems to have some fun "scripted?" missions. I didn't find it that hard and I'm no strategy game Player at all. Well, the beginning was/seemed? hard but it got easier as time progressed. Am now doing flashpoint stuff but I think I'm just getting a bit bored with the whole thing (well I have +170 hours on it so fair enough I would say).

Learn the game in career mode.. if you wanna play the story later it will be 10x easier and you can just breeze through it.

:)

You could move to the mod-scene and play with Battletech Reloaded. It converts the campaign into flashpoint, and then you can do it if and when you feel like it if it aligns with your travel plans. If you delay too long, it'll disappear (presumably because you weren't there to save the day).

I don't feel like the campaign is particularly invasive to the sandbox play, but "to each his own"
