The King Crab has 2 ballistic, 4 energy, and 4 missile. The missile hardpoints are all on LT, so it can't be used as an LRM boat, but beyond that it can be armed more heavily than the Atlas. Furthermore, while the Atlas has an energy hardpoint on each arm, the King Crab has a ballistic hardpoint on each, meaning your important weapons get the +1 accuracy bonus.
i find the kc has better weapon slots but i actually prefer the atlas as it looks cooler and has better melee damage
Essentially it is 'tougher', and the AI can't use called shots to specifically aim for your side torsos instead of your arms if you spread the damage around. You can tear both arms off an Atlass and all it has lost is 2 energy and 2 support.
The King crab is amazing, and is more suitable for ace custom hand tailored builds (Or, you know. sticking with near stock because dual AC20s are always Just That Good). When you know you've got the advantage in either tonnage or tactics, crab is probably going to be your best bet.
But an early atlas can be a godsend for if you want your B team to get experience outside of a sim pod without putting your + variants at risk in the process.
Direwolf.
...Hey the direwolf has an XL engine, right? Man, they would be so screwed even if one showed up this early somehow in HBS Btech land.
Imo, SRM6 +damage weapons are hands down the best in the game. For their weight and heat they are the best, AND they do stability damage as well. For one ton of weight for ammo, they get to fire almost 17 times, which is also a better ratio than AC20/5 times, etc...
