I never bothered to sign up, because Paradox already got my money and I didn't feel like being directly marketed to. But other than cross platform multiplayer, am I missing anyting by not signing up?

and i read somewhere, for the skins (preorder/delux edition?) you have to be logged in, but i'm not 100% sure about that

Backers got a code for the skins that has to be entered inside the game while logged into your Paradox account.

No idea if that applies to anyone else.

Oh the paradox login is the same as their forum login? Jeez, then I probably already have it. Ok! I just figured it was another one of the many signups that lock you in to receiving spam emails about whatever game they were selling for 10% off.

Well technically I gave Valve my money, and the publisher got Valve's money. The publisher will typically keep close to half the wholesale cost while the developer gets royalties of around 10-30% depending on the deal they agreed on. Everything else goes to production, licensing, distribution, & other random costs. It can get muddied, and changes from one company to the next but that's a super simplified version.

You would also miss 100% achievements, because some of them must be acquired from multiplayers. But you can still play the campaign and skirmish against AI components, like a PvE mode of PvP.
