Its an ugly chicken mech with gumby arms.
As a question of aesthetics I'd say it's one of the prettier mechs. But hey, that's in the eyes of the beholder.
Overrated? The only thing it has going against it is the cost.
Now, if you are talking about Mad Cats from II and up to IV. That is when design trully starts to shine. Mad Cat II is a reliable battletested assault battlemech, Mad Cat III was the biggest medium omnimech selling hit at the time, and Mad Cat IV is the original Timber Wolf with better tech and less problems ( wich is exactly what made it the dreaded Savage Wolf ).
Talking about overrated though. *cought* Marauder. The whole point of Night Star was to make a command mech that would not die from a single cockpit hit.
The only time it's not top dog is when you play Mechwarrior cause you can customize your own Mechs specifically to fight it.
