It is so ugly that Diamnond Sharks made a fortune enough to buy half the Lyran Wolrds by selling 3 later gens of Mad Cat to both IS and Clans.

As a question of aesthetics I'd say it's one of the prettier mechs. But hey, that's in the eyes of the beholder.

Overrated? The only thing it has going against it is the cost.

Nah. Timber Wolf's visual profile is pretty bad. That is for sure. Distinctive missile pods and arms are a prime targets. Also not very heavely armored and with clear heat management problems. It was dangerous because it's relative high mobility and an array of weapons that cover every range bracket.
Now, if you are talking about Mad Cats from II and up to IV. That is when design trully starts to shine. Mad Cat II is a reliable battletested assault battlemech, Mad Cat III was the biggest medium omnimech selling hit at the time, and Mad Cat IV is the original Timber Wolf with better tech and less problems ( wich is exactly what made it the dreaded Savage Wolf ).
Talking about overrated though. *cought* Marauder. The whole point of Night Star was to make a command mech that would not die from a single cockpit hit.

Err what are you talking about? Timber Wolf has 12 tons of Clan ferro fibrous, that is easily better than some Assault Mech levels of protection. It also has plenty of heatsinks to boot unless you are going on about the infamous Delta variant and even then that can handle it's heat load rather well. The reason why the Mad Cat is considered the king of Heavy Mechs is because it is the perfect blend of firepower, speed and protection.

The only time it's not top dog is when you play Mechwarrior cause you can customize your own Mechs specifically to fight it.
