I think it's just plain awesome that folks went to that much trouble for a free mod, just so that people can have fun.
But it might not be for me. I am a little weird.
This guide can help for starters
And about RT
The "Mods" that are part of it are for the most part Frameworks, not mods in their own right, but tools that enable a mod to do more things eg CustomBundle that enables far more weapon changes, vtols and even equipment that can be activated and toggled or SkillBasedInitiative that allows to fine tune how the iniative system works to even go to include engines, pilot skills and mech sizes
On their own, none of these have any tangible gameplay effect

Big changes in RT is costly and lengthy process. You don't want to change engine type and engine core often, and there is no reason to do it. Similar can be said about any big changes - armor\structure type or full rearm of 'Mech is not routine procedure, but something that you do with a plan and purpose. Just like in-universe.
That said, there is a good chunk of inventory managment and equpement planning, because your main source of new cool parts is salvage, and there a LOT of goodies to take, if you know how to harvest rich opponents without big damage.
RT have a lot more deeper mechanics, like changed initiative system or whole vision/sensors system, which can be "not fun" to learn and use. Not even talking about big chunk of new equpement. It's a big overhaul.
If you simply want more difficulty, look for "Advanced AI" on Nexus.
In an amazing turn of events - different people enjoy different things. ;)
Edit: I tried the Battletech Extended mod, was a bit to install but wow, this is exactly what I want. Much more, but feels like the same game. Thank you for the recommendation Bardbarian/Dave - https://www.nexusmods.com/battletech/mods/387 to get it.
