Tested it out so you don't have to: Cicada CDA-2A with Coil Laser equals BAD
In theory it sounds really good; the farther you move, the more damage you output. Well, I stuck a Coil (S) on the fastest mech piloted by an Ace Pilot. Was able to move maximum distance because the map had roads and was able to generate 105 DAM (of potential damage). I say potential because I can't hit a damn thing with it! Three tries and no hits! All it was able to do was a measly 25 DAM from melee. 4th attempt was standing next to a downed mech with a Call-Shot, and that missed too.

Oh, did I mention every time I try to stump a convoy, the vehicle lives! And the heat-up from that one and ONLY weapon??? It's ungodly!

So I think the Cicada CDA-2A is just a bad mech with the Coil, I had no problems with it on the Vulcans or the Phoenix Hawks.

if you've got heavy metal, try the assassin, that thing is insane.

Isn't Coils available only in heavy metal? In any case I do have it.

think so. the reason why is the text for the weapon says that it is dependant on evasion, not movement. the assassin can generate more evasion because of it's jump jets. really want to see if it carries over with ace pilot though. are the evasion pips still there during the following phase? and do they count for firing?

Coils don't work with jump jets, only movements pips.

My Cicada has a Coil - L (I assume it is "Large") and deals oaround 170 dmg. Chick piloting it has piloting skill at 6 and gunnery at 6 and hits almost every time. From my experience I can say that Cicada with Coil is pretty effective. Looking forward to putting one on my Phoenix Hawk.

The Cicada sucks. I found it best used as a death dealer when the enemy Mech is missing limbs and low on armor. The damage from the coil is hopefully enough to flow to the central torso and destroy it.

But they only charge but actual movement, not jets?
That stuff is pretty neat on plains but I don't use S type, only M and L ones.

Yeah, I put a Coil-L on my Jenner at the start of a new Career, and it's been happily missing 70-80% shots ever since. /facepalm

It's the same with any major damage dealing single target weapon. it isn't just if you miss, it's did you hit the spot you needed to as well

If .... and this is a big if, since I've hated the Cicada since tabletop .... if I were to run a Cicada with a Coil, I'd see if there was room to stuff in an energy TTS. That's the solution to the recoil of the ultra-5 I had on my Rifleman, a ballistic TTS, and if the coils are as powerufl but innacurate as they sound, a TTS is what, a ton?
Malkor2 Nov 27, 2019 @ 2:20pm
A little bit off topic but since it was asked: Aside from the normal TTS with +3 acc that weighs 3 tons there are now new ones with +3 acc that only weigh one ton.

That's highly unfair.

The CDA is just a bad mech with any loadout.

Lol, that is true. Normally I would never use a CDA, but for battlefield science I had to try.

<3 my Assassin. He's not a great damage dealer but an awesome scout, opportunist and "kiter."

Last mission, for example, 4 mechs and 4 vehicles were chasing him all over the map while my LRM-loaded Trebuchet (artillery) and AC-loaded Jagermech (sniper) picked-off the pursuers at long range from an elevated position (mountains). Eventually, he led the wounded and scattered survivors back to my "party" hiding in the cliffs when my heavily armored but short range/melee-focused Centurion jumped-out and finished them off one-by-one. Tactics > Firepower! :steamhappy:
