How rare are mechs in lore?
I've started a career and made it so you need 8 salvage parts to construct a mech, and reduced salvage payment to "stingy". I used to have it at 3, but after a few months, I was overflowing with light mechs. I get the impression that mechs are awesome war machines that only a small elite can use?

pretty much yes but its a game so mechs are pokemon. If you really want to be lore friendly you would be very grateful for the heirloom blackjack and salvage would be reduced to "pitiful" and mechparts would be like infinity and the only thing you can make is janky frankenmechs. But apparently Yang is a mad genius, and the Argo mechbay is pure Star League magic.

Since 1.8 mechs are about as common as Hatchbacks today, every second store in the periphery has 2 or 3 available.
If lore they are far more rare than this!

That realy depends. Deep Periphery is loaded with mechs. Very advanced mechs. because that is where Crusader clans are building their invasion plans. It is pretty silly how Wolf's Dragoons come to Inner Sphere with aproximate ( by clans calculations ) average force for local powers. But ended up with several battlemech regiments, kommando regiment, dropships, battleships, space station, loads of rare SLDF era mechs and several completely unseen. That was akward.
Rimward Periphery and Inner Sphere are in a relative dark age though.

It's close to warhammer 40k. but you're never actually going to see it. the good mechs are rare, the basic mechs are rare, but in production. but you're not going to see the field unless you're going up against mechs or heavy vehicles. at which point your salvage rights are going to kick in. they're not going to call out an atlas to take out a platoon of infantry.

Yeah, Jaime Wolf is no Phelan Kell/Wolf, lol. Needs several battlemech regiments, kommando regiment, dropships, battleships, space station, loads of rare SLDF era mechs and several completely unseen to back him up.

In this period of time, rare and getting rarer - the number of mech losses are higher than new mechs being made (until the discovery of the helm memory core in 3028).

Really in this time period and geographical area, you'd expect to mainly face infantry and vehicles, but just like in the tabletop game its a game about mechs, so everyone has them.
