I have reloaded my previous save from a game that I finished my campaign with. Have not checked out career mode yet. I like my old squad with a bajillion assaults
Story-wise.
Neither add anything to the campaign but they both add their own Flashpoints to the game. Heavy Metal in particular adds multiple connected flashpoints into a sorta mini-campaign that starts relatively simple and gets harder as you progress until a final mission that is quite challenging. You could start it early but will be required to upgrade you pilots and mechs to continue. I am unsure if Urban Warfare has a significant impact like that. I barely played Urban Warfare before heavy Metal came out though it does add mechs and the Urban map.
Edit: I'd wait until the summer sale around the corner to see what kinda discount it gets.
Yes or No ???
Details you did not ask for:
1. Flashpoint missions become available in career mode a few weeks into the game.
2. Flashpoint missions become available in campaign mode after you finish the campaign.
3. A new game is not necessary in either of the two points above.
