The icon displayed on the file type where its showing Left for Dead as the program that opens it may just be because that game has claimed file association with windows to that file type (instead of leaving it generic). Sorta like media players like VLC or Winamp will change all the icons on and mp3 collection so the file opens in that program by default.
This does not actually have any direct effect on the file type unless you try to double click on it and can be ignored :)
TY ExMacbeth though for the detailed answer as it helped me clear up something else I was trying to figure out .
I've seen associations get stuck even after a program is uninstalled, but the only time I have seen an icon associated for a program that was never installed is if some other application "borrowed" the icon for some reason.
If your on Win10 you can check/change the association by either:
1. Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose Default Apps By File Type
2. Control Panel > Programs > Choose Default Programs
3. Right Click on file > Open With > Select application & use checkbox to make it default
Two of those work in older OSs if your running something other than Windows 10. But the first 2 will tell you up front what app is used by that file type so you can see if its just something using that icon :)
Its more of a Where the hell did it get associated with that from thing, and why. I was hesitand to change the association till I copy that folder and isolate it, just on the off chance it is something I have never seen or some other crazy issue and not only messes up BT but others, plus at over 400 days in I dont want to lose anything . I will get it copied in the morning if doesnt re-associate by then.
Like I said , I cant for the life of me figure out where the LFD 2 came from and thats bothersome to me.
Appreciate your advice and tips, if you can figure it out by all means please let me know what you come up with.
Thanks !
Stone
However you decide to clean it up though, the windows file association that determines what icon/app owns that file type won't have any effect on the save file unless you try to actually open & resave it using that application. Since its a global record the files will probobly still show up as LFD even in a different folder. The easiest fix is just to reset the association record using one of the 3 methods up to you.
Hope that helps :)
your steam game library there
and another place
1) when you go to your steam library, kindly go click the word "games"
2) then go click the word "hidden".
there are games put in the hidden folder in the steam game library.
another method is this
1) open file explorer
2) type "control panel" and press enter
3) click the drop down arrow beside the word "all control panel items"
4) click "programs and features"
5) check by scrolling down to see if the name "left for dead" or "left for dead 2" is there
if it is there, that means someone installed the game on your computer.
and based on this, it is clearly shown you are sharing your computer with someone else in your family and one of them buy the game and install it on your computer.
LFD 2 has been out for more than 5 years.
She is allowed to install from Steam as long as she asked, and thats only when using my system and not hers.
I will ask her if she did maybe do something, try a demo or whatever. I've been gaming a long time and on the Internet since early 90s and have seen some crazy things involved with all that but this ones way up there.
I even checked my Security logs from my router n lan to see if it was a remote , nothing to even hint that it was.
Begining to wonder if I am sleep gaming or something cause im stumped.
Not my kind of game , thought I seen something about a new one so thats what I was basing it off of.
Bluewolf I am wondering if its something in that nature. I dont show a record abywhere on Steam of that but , It could be that my daughter or my then 16-17 yr old son started a DL of the demo or something of that nature and stopped it part way threw.
Still doesnt explain it very well, or how it happened even then. Waiting to hear from my kids, they will let me know if they did. They know I wouldnt be upset with them , I would be far more upset though with dishonesty.
Only reason I posted this is because with the issues some people are having with BT I wanted to see if it was even remotely possible that something completely crazy was going on and if anyone else had a issue with the .SAV files being associated with a game they dont own, or to thier knowledge have.
I will mark this as answered and if something comes up and it needs to be posted I will repost it.I will use the first reply as a answer but all were appreciated.
Thanks to everyone that helped me with this, I am glad its not a issue for anyone here.
