Are the Robotech/Macross mechs in this game?
I know this is sort of an infamous thing FASA did back in the day with the original Battletech game, but they basically ripped off the art work from Macross/Robotech to create the Wasp, Stinger, Phoenix, Maurader, Rifleman, Archer, and some other mechs for their illustrations and design.

Thing is though, those models were cool. So far the only legacy mech I see in the game is the locust and I'm not sure if it's the "cool" looking version[1.bp.blogspot.com] I remember. Maybe I've only seen it from a bad angle.

I'd really love it if the classic mech designs (rip-offs though they might be) were in the game. Anyone know if that's the case?

The art will not be modded. It would have to be created. Lots of the original mechs from Macross, Dougram and Crusher Joe are making it into the game. Only a handful were pulled at the last second due to legal concerns. But in early trailers we saw the Marauder and the Warhammer mech. We also know the art for the Rifleman and Archer are available as HBS has the artwork being used by MWO for this game. Just as HBS is sharing with PGI the artwork for vehicles.

So some of the anime mecha make it into the game. It has been redone by Alex Iglesias of PGI so passes the trademark/copyright test of not being straight copies of the originals. HG is currently dragging the new court case out as long as possible. PGI and now HBS have asked for a dismissal with prejudice. Meaning they both feel there is enough proof to show HG has no standing, knows it has no standing and this lawsuit is without merit. Such that if a Judge rules that, HG would owe all costs and never be able to sue on this subject again. PGI and HBS asked for this dismissal based on HG's own earlier court cases where it showed they did not own the rights to the mecha at all and those are owned by Big West. The Japanese courts have also shown this to be true. The company HG purchased rights from did not own them so HG has never owned the rights to the artwork of the mecha.

So in a nutshell, all the old Macross mechs will probably be in the game eventually. Some are in now.

First off: No. It's unlikely.

Secondly: They weren't ripped off, they were purchased.

edit: I'd also like to add that it's thanks to those Gold Star ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that we'll never get real SDF Macross here in the States.

HBS and Harmony Gold are currently in a lawsuit so no, they're not going to be in the release.

Should HBS win the lawsuit then we'll probably see them in an expansion or patch.

To add to this so that HBS is clearly seen as the victim here, Gold Star ♥♥♥♥ Wads have been trolling at lawsuits for decades. They went so far as to SUE THE ORIGINAL ANIME STUDIO. Yes, that's right. The original studio licensed their property to both FASA and Gold Star, then Gold Star sued the studio for using the material licensed to them.

Interesting. My knowledge comes from pre-internet days in the hobby stores. Are you saying FASA liscensed the artwork from the Japanese studio? If the Robotech studio thought they were getting the exclusive rights then I could understand how they'd be mad if they found out it was also liscenced to FASA. Also sad that a game studio is being sued by Harmony Gold for artwork that isn't in the game. Weird.

Too bad about all the rancor since I don't care about the drama. I just like the cool looking mechs and wish they were in the game.

It will all be in MODs in no time. HG can go frack themselves.

There is no such anime as Robotech. Gold Star ♥♥♥♥'wits put three anime into a blender and then raped the ♥♥♥♥ out of the original scripts to ♥♥♥♥ out Robotech.

It doesn't take much effort to find out why HG is nearly universally dispised. They have no talent beyond meritless legal actions over content they never owned or created.

There is a cartoon show called Robotech. You may not like it, but it is so. Please confine your political outrage enough to avoid senseless hyperbole. I'm not interested in it. This is rapidly devolving into a fact-free zone.

No that was an accurate description of Robotech, the Cartoon/Anime. That was the intended point.

This. It is absolutely not hyperbole. Also, this isn't political. If you want fact-free, read Gold Star's legal briefs.

Chris

That's good news. I guess I'm a little worried because of how the Locust looks in the game currently (and I don't recall if the original Locust was from Robotech/Macross...). I definitely don't like this weird snub-nose look that's in the current game compared to the old under-turrent look it used to have.

Those old designs just have so much more charisma and character than what I've seen so far. I wouldn't be against new designs if only they had something to distinguish them. These designs currently, especially the "spider" and "blackjack", have nothing going on and are frankly uninspired. I don't blame the developer for this, of course. Just that I found the choice of canon a bit baffling without knowledge of the background circumstances. Really hope everything works out for the best with the game.
