Change starting mechs?
I was looking through the SimGameConstants file and saw that it had the listed mechs starting the game. I'm tempted to change that and see what happens. Not to an Atlas or soemthing like that but change one to Panther and see the result.

It only works if you follow the unwritten rule about always including an Urbanmech.
maybe this could be a dlc or content patch some more pics to staring background and a differant choose of mech

So...sorry to necro this. Anyone have a link to that event mod to change the ancestral mech? I've searched the nexus and can't seem to find it.
It's in the simgameconstants.json

It's also the sort of thing you have to decide to your personal taste do to all the possibilities.

So you can't just upload a one and done mod like you an "I NERFED AC2 BECAUSE OMG STRONGER THAN TABLETOP! ALSO BUFFED PPCS TO BE HEAT NEUTRAL I AM A GENIUS".

Best a mod uploader can do is make an example mod, and hand you a note "Here do it yourself if you don't want an all locust lance or some other fake bragging rights garbage"

In the Simgameconstants.json. Look for the lines-

StartingPlayerMech (Your own mech, duh)
StartingLance (the four other mechs you get with the leopard)

If you actually want to play the miner mission tutorial with your spread of mods.

1; Glitchs' mech.
2; Behemoth's mech.
3; Dekker's mech.
4; Spare sitting on the leopard.

I don't know if adding more than your player and 4 starter mechs breaks anything or not.

For the particular mech names you need to use, look in the streamingassets\data\mechs.

For example.

"mechdef_quickdraw_QKD-5A"

or

"mechdef_urbanmech_UM-R60"

There is already a mod that does this over at Battletech Nexus.
I know about manually editing the json files. But I read there is an actual mod that creates an event to select a different ancestral mech. As the tutorial needs the jumpjets to progress, I'm guessing the mod uses only jumpjet enabled mechs. I would like to know if there is a link to the mod as searching the Nexus didn't yield any results.

For whatever reason, they decided to lock you in with the same starting mech and pilots, doesn't matter what backgrounds you pick, no option for anything else. It's a pretty big disappointment, and modders are left with the burden of changing it. I question the point of having all these background options in the first place because they literally do nothing. They are illusions of choice. Less choices that actually did something, would have been more ideal than this many, which don't do anything.

Having fixed set of starting mechs is a huge mistake by HBS.

It's something that they could have changed so easily (to greatly improve replayability).
Also, they should have designed a separate tutorial instead of forcing us to go through the start.

Nah, fixed mechs by default means you get to pick the backgrounds you think are cool just for their own sake.

Otherwise, we'd get people crying up a river if Deep Periphery didn't have the best starter mech.

Unless Deep Periphery was a Locust with the quote "It's not the best mech, but THINK OF THE GLORY". Then all would be forgiven.
