I just go with the mech neame followed by alpha, beta, gamma, etc. to distinguish between different load outs.

I did consider naming them after flowers, no one want to be defeated by the buttercup.

I generally just modify the mech's official name for my own purposes, like my AC/20 Hunchback is 'Cannonback,' or the Shadow Hawks partially renamed 'Sniper Hawk' (PPC/LRMs) and 'Umbra Hawk' (bc of 'Umbra' alternate skin).
A full rename is my Centurion 'Cylon.' I'll give you 2 hints as to that reference XD

I did not lose time naming my mechs. I also do not lose time naming my hardware tools in my shed...

Yeah, I did that in my new playthrough, to make the AC/20 Cent stand out from the other two I have.

And I only named a few mechs in my original campaign for similar reasons - so it was easier to tell which was which. My main King Crab is the Mirelurk Queen (I'd run into FO4 references recently when I named it), my two Grasshoppers are the GlitchHopper and the LasHopper. Stuff like that - I've only bothered to name things when I have multiple of that model readied in the bays.

I sprayainted "Blackjack" on the side of my Jager S.

Dual AC5, 4 Medium lasers. No guys my ancestral Blackjack just had a growth spurt, honest.

I also named my first pair of Orions "Bad Intel" and "Just Withdraw". Clearly what pirate message boards were telling eachother about any mission I arrived in on a 2 skull mission.

Didn't you know fighting protagonist merc units is just hard but fair?

Like many people it seems, I name my SLDF Highlander "MacLeod." If I get a second highlander I name it "Kurgan." If I happen to get an early +melee arm mod I assign it to a Shadow Hawk variant and call it "Shadow Fist."

That's wierd. The couple of times I clicked the "Edit name" button next to the mech's name nothing happened. I wonder why. I mean the UI is laggy as all hell at times but it didnt seem to be that.

Only one mech I am going to rename and thats the King Crab. And I wager someone can guess what it will be called.

The Deadliest Catch?

That really ought to be the pilot's name...then name the mech "Chicken".

Mine get names like- "Close Encounter", "Hot Stuff", "Lead Poisoning", "Longshot", "B-52", "OnePunch", and "Hammertime".

My Dragons always get named after Dragonball Z attacks. "Kamehameha", "Makakansappo", "Galick Gun", "Dodonpa". I inevitably only get two Highlanders, so they're "White Dragon" and "Black Dragon". My Grasshoppers so far have been called "Horror Show", "Nightmare", and "Boogeyman". Griffins get called "-Weapon- Bird", for example "Laser Bird". Helps me remember what I armed them with. Centurions and Enforcers share a naming trend, things like "Gladius", "Trident", "Glaive", etc. Trebuchets are simple: "Sniper", "Ballista", "Shrapnel". Then there's the melee mechs regardless of chassis: "Facepuncher", "Shinkicker", "Ankle Biter", "Toe Stomper", "Drunken Mule".

Enjoy.

I name my mechs so I can tell what they do at a glance.

If it shoots SRMs/Medium Lasers: "SPLAT"

If it shoots LRMs: "Lurms"

If it shoots AC20s: "BOOM"

If it shoots long range projectiles: "Sniper"

If it shoots Large Lasers: "ZAPPP"

If it jumps around: "Bouncy"

If it does two different things, combine the names.

"Sniper SPLAT"
"BOOM SPLAT"
etc.
Atlas- Dies Arae
King Crab- Memento Mori
SLDF Highlander- Gravedemon
Awesome T Variant- Rolling Thunder
