What is your favorite BattleTech faction?

We've got a lot of fans coming over from tabletop and other franchise video games, so I thought it might be fun to see what factions everyone hails from. Can be anywhere, even free companies. And I suppose the filthy Clanners can declare their allegiance to whatever stupid bird or dog or whatever they worship.


Personally, my TT unit was part of the ComGuards. Not a lot of people like ComStar because it keeps all the good tech to itself, but I'm all about that. Besides, I love all that quasi-religious techno-mysticism crap. I actually have a sticker of a tech-priest from Warhammer 40k on my tower to appease the computer's machine spirit. Like da ComStar baby!

Though I've heard the Free Worlds League referred to also as America in space. House 'Marika.

Or FWL is space Yugoslavia/Kashmir.

And FS is House Western Europe, while LC is House Central Europe circa 1980. And CC is everything behind the iron curtain.

It's been said that Liaos come in three varieties:

Anyway...I like the Magistracy a lot. They've turned their little periphery state into Space Las Vegas and managed to be so attractive as a vacation spot that nobody will invade them.

Lots of Steiner fans. I guess they're generally cool but that double-crossing harridan Katrina Steiner-Davion made me like them a lot less. The Federated Commonwealth was the closest the Inner Sphere got to stability since the fall of the Star league and she ruined it.

Nice seeing where everyone hails from. This is a lot more variety than I was expecting. I guess where I lived there were just a lot of Davions, most of whom then turned into Clanners.

As if that matters. The Federated Suns is space America, it was a republic before Davion gained control. The Lyran Commonwealth is space Europe. The Draconis Combine is space Japan and Soviet Union. The Capellan Confederation is space China. The Free Rasalhauge Republic is space Scandanavia. The Periphery and bandit kingdoms are space third-world. Comstar is space Corporate Empire.

Edit- oh and Comstar is also religion.

Actually all the major religions of the real world are present in the Battletech Universe, Davion is heavily Catholic, Steiner Protestant, etc. Then there are Jewish and Islamic populations among the factions as well.

Comstar are like if a telecoms company like Comcast or British Telecom, became militarised and formed their own fundamentalist religion.

The Free Worlds League has the most religious diversity, mainly because it's made up of a lot of planets that were colonized with the explicit purpose of giving religion X their own private planet. It's both a constant source of friction and a major driving force of culture, trade and tourism. Another nod to Marik's austro-hungarian roots, I believe...


This of course backfired massively on them when they gave shelter to the WOBbies...

Aww, damn it all to hell. I had something for this. It was a picture of Atlases tumbling out of a Dropship from low orbit, with the caption "Steiner Tactics" os something like that. But I lost it and can't find it any more.

Mechcommander 2 was my introduction to the factions of Battletech. So as a result I dislike Steiner and Liao, and I like Davion. That they're kinda anglo-french space arthurians is a bonus.

And I'd have thought the Aurigan Directorate is more the space 'murica. They've got their own guantanamo bay, they don't hesitate to kill their own people, they came to be by usurping their rightful ruler, their preferred tactic is to bomb/shell the ♥♥♥♥ out of everything, and they're convinced they're acting for the greater good when anyone sane can see that's ridiculous.
