Is the griffin 10 tonnes stronger but still a worse sniper than the Vindicator?
The griffin has more speed and 5 more missiles from its LRM. But it has much less heat syncing which basicly means it cant snipe as much as the Vindicator.

At least when it comes to long range sniping role is the griffin a side grade or even a downgrade from the 10 ton lighter, game starter mech?

The vindicator was designed to snipe, the griffon is designed as a multi role mobile attack platform....you are comparing apples to oranges

You don't snipe with missiles....they have 6 possible areas where they could land...

Missiles are good for damaging enemy stability.

For a proper sniping you should use AC/LAS with bonus damage.

I was just comparing PPC platforms which both come with stock standard. The griffin seems like a faster but far more overheating PPC platform. Problem is ppc platform dont even need to enter visual range of combat so the vindicator rarely has to move.

I wanted to replace my last starter mech with something heavier but I still havnt found something which can core a mech out at range like the vindicator.

AC/LLAS Jagermech with bonus acc or dam.

Correct, the griffin is faster, thus has less room for weapons/heatsinks. So for a sniper, probably not ideal.

Griffin is better as a skirmish/Brawler IMO. With med lasers and srm's.

I like the GRF-1S variant over the GRF-1N for a bit more tactical flexibility, and I've had a good deal of success: PPCs replaced with Large Laser and 2 x Medium Lasers; LRM-10 replaced with LRM-5.

I've also been experimenting with a custom variation of the GRF-2N variant, by removing the PPC and the LRM and replacing them with 1x Large Laser, 1x Medium laser and 2x SRM-6s.

Very nearly the same as mine. I dont remember the variant but ive got:

2x SRM 6.
2x Mlaser.
2x MG.

Then jump jets. Some heat sinks and 820 total armor I think.

If you want it to be PPC platform then any 50t mech with energy hardpoint in arm, except for trebuchet, will do. Centurion AL, enforcer, hunchbacks. All of them will have 3t more for heatsinks/armor than vindicator. You can try enfrocer with PPC + AC/5 in arms if you want.

Griffin gets a little better if you replace its LRM 10 with two LRM 5s. Weighs a ton less, which allows you to add another heat sink or more armor while keeping damage and ammo consumption the same. I also find that four jump jets generally suffices for my needs with Griffins, giving me another extra half ton for more armor.

I use a Griffin as my Sniper. The PPC CAN (and the can is stretched very long) be a beast, capping knees left and right. And he can give light to moderate indirect fire support. For now: I like him WAAAAY better then the Vindicator. Yet I am still looking for a better sniper Alternative.

But a Griffin with a Trebuchet filled up with LRMs on the back line? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they wreck havoc for tow medium Mechs. Can´t wait to get my hands on the big lrm supporters and snipers :D

Dump the Treb for a Cent.

Honestly? I dont like centurions. I know they pack a punch, but my esthetics kick in. That ♥♥♥♥♥ looks like someone beat it with an ugly stick. And the Trenchbucket is just loyal to me. It flatens enemies in one volley most of the time for me (lucky rolls) and allows my Griff to finish the job. it is just personal taste :)

Drop the LRM10 to a LRM5. If you're not using LRMs for stability damage or crit seeking you shouldn't have anything bigger than a token LRM5, which has the purpose of removing evasion chevrons. The Vindicator sinks heat better and has fewer jump jets.

Based on their stock builds the Vindicator is a better sniper. Not a better long-range unit, but a better sniper. Those aren't the same thing. The Griffin has better potential due to its extra tonnage, of course, but we're comparing stock.

The Catapult-K2 and Awesome-8Q are the next best two snipers higher up in the tonnage bracket. The Grasshopper and Stalker have potential too but they aren't natural snipers.
