BATTLETECH
Why are the kickstarter backer mechwarriors backstories so bad?
I mean ignoring all of the wierdos and the intrusion of current insanity into many of them, even the "okay" ones are really bad.

Like there is one guy, a fake sounding Japanese name (cant remember his callsign), his backstory is that when he went on his first extended training operation he lost his mind and became Japanese. Wierdly his stats even have 1 guts, presumably as a joke about how weak minded he is. Why would you hire that person as a mercenary? Why would you let that man near any kind of dangerous machinery.

But yeah, what exactly is going on with the back stories. Did they have an intern write them or something?

As one of the Kickstarter backers who created one of the in-game hireable MechWarriors, I can inform you that the problem was mostly caused by HBS and HBS' lead designer, Kiva Maginn.

In order to create our hireable MechWarriors, HBS gave us access to an online form to fill out that was extremely poorly layed out! For example, the online form didn't even have a section for including the MechWarrior's callsign, and the online form didn't even have a section specifically asking for the MechWarrior's backstory! HBS didn't even bother to inform us what in-game effects the new skills (Guts and Tactics) have at the time that we had to submit the form!

Instead of allowing us to create the MechWarriors that we wanted to create, HBS' MechWarrior generation system encouraged us to select background choices and career choices that provided the best development of our MechWarrior's skill values and acquisition of career tags (the career tags can cause the MechWarrior to be affected by the game's (random) event system). HBS' MechWarrior generation system stifled creativity!

It was Kiva Maginn that edited all of the Kickstarter backer's MechWarrior's backstories. Kiva butchered my MechWarrior's CV (curriculum vitae) (resume) by omitting important information and completely changing my MechWarrior's backstory! I was appalled at the dreadful backstory that Kiva created for my hireable MechWarrior! And then HBS gave my hireable MechWarrior (who is from the Lyran Commonwealth) a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ American accent that is nothing like the real person that I based my hireable MechWarrior on! It was an insult to my paying US$2000 for the privilege of having my hireable MechWarrior in the game!

I was also appalled that my MechWarrior's portrait looks nothing like the photo of the person that I submitted!

The fact that this game has dreadful game mechanics just makes me all the more angry!

I used to be one of the biggest and most passionate BattleTech fans in the world until HBS released the video game BATTLETECH (2018) and ruined my love of the BattleTech universe!

Hey it could be worse. At least your kickstarted game actually came out with your character in it. I was stupid enough to kickstart a character in the Mandate. (which will never be released.)

Still kicking myself about that. (pardon the pun.)

People have a tendency to defend mistakes. It is known as the escalation of commitment (aka EoC fallacy/Sunk Cost fallacy).

In reverse, people also tend to exaggerate things they don't like to drum up support for the 'wrongdoing done to them' or 'I disagree and anyone who objects is a fascist/traitor/communist/brainless moron etc etc'. Big world out there and lots of different people with different possible responses, some intelligent, some not. Life's like that.

I know... Hence;

This. Given this KS backer's hyperbole and their general rage at the game, AND the fact that OTHER players who have their custom characters in the game actually seem mostly pleased -- or at least, generally accepting of -- the end result*, I would take gazra's post with a HUGE grain of salt.

(*C.F. an early post on these forums when the game was first launched, where a couple of the KS backers eagerly showcase their custom Kickstarter-backed characters.)

Just because Gazra is unusual does not necessarily mean he is lying. Course doesnt necessarily mean he is telling the truth either, but his story fits as well as anything else.

If you want to... Well honestly I have no idea what you were playing at with this comment but know it was distasteful.

Hellgate London is the one done by the people that made Sunless Sea isnt it? I have not seen anything bad about it, yet your comment makes me think you dont like it.
