if one side is completly unarmed, i'm using that side as a shield (turning it towards the enemy) until it's armor is somewhat damaged, worsed case until the armor is destroyed, so i'm sticking with the ammo on the same side as the weapon anyway.
if i get the same gun on both sides, i'm spreading the ammo as well.
90% of all times side torso of the same weapon, 5% of the oposite side, 4% in legs (i don't like to get one of those blown up thanks to a crit) and 1% in CT/head.
Head -> Lowest chance to receive a hit, structural damage is death anyways.
Legs -> Lower chance to be hit in close range, rarely a focus fire target for heavy and assault mechs, losing legs isn't really a debilitating issue for heavies, assaults, or jump jet equipped mechs. Don't put the ammo in the legs of lights, or smaller mediums as they're often primary target locations and can cost you a lot of firepower.
Arms -> Lower chance to be hit at long range, rarely a focus fire target, if an arm is lost and the weapon is lost you don't need the ammo anyways, and weapon critical locations reduce odds for the ammo to be hit. Don't put ammo in the arms in brawlers or other CQC mechs as you should be using the arms to block incoming damage.
Side Torsos -> Great location for ammo for brawler and close range mechs, and mechs that you intend to do Death From Above with. Also a great location for ammo if you have torso mounted guns to help absorb incoming critical damage. Side Torsos are also non-critical components because we don't have XL engines yet. If a mech loses it's torso and it's torso mounted weapons, it doesn't need the ammo anyways.
Center Torso -> The worst location on the entire mech to put ammo. The most often hit location, and the most often focused location. It doesn't have many components to soak criticals either, so criticals to the CT are most often going to hit the few components placed inside of it. Also the most important location on the mech to protect, and the hardest to do so. Ammo in the CT is a death sentence.
Ex: Jagermech ammo goes in the legs because it's a long range heavy you don't DFA with.
Ex: Shadowhawk ammo goes in the side torsos with the guns because it's a medium, and it's often in close quarters combat so it's prone to losing it's arms and legs.
Ex: Jenner ammo goes in the side torsos because it's a light mech that often finds itself fighting in close quarters and is prone to losing it's arms and legs.
Ex: Blackjack ammo goes in the arms because they're unlikely to be hit at long range, and the primary guns are lost when the arms are destroyed.
Ex: Atlas ammo goes in the enemy mechs because on the Atlas is likely to be destroyed ever, and even if it is the Atlas probably doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ anyway and is going to punch you in the ♥♥♥♥.
The head is the priority location for ammo, but it prevents use of cockpit mods like +3 injury resistance or +2 moral gain which are much more valuable.
Hope this helps, and stay frosty.
