3 skull mission playing like a 4.5
Anyone else having this issue? Took a 3 skull mission, plopped down on it, and found that there were 5 heavy mechs and 3 mediums just waiting for me. Tonnage wise they were almost double what I had access to at the time for myheaviest. Is this normal? Is there a way to get a proper mission instead of this doubled up monstrosity?

It's random. load up the mission again and it comes with a different set of mech composition.

That's the beauty of this game. Every now and then it'll throw in a surprise.

I got 4 skull missions playing like 2 skulls. 2 lances of 50 tonners vs my 75 tonners. They all get oneshot.

wait for the convoy of multiple PPC carrieres.. ouch
I would much rather have a long challenging battle instead of starting up a 3 skull mission only to get 2 medium or 2 heavy mechs in the field that die in the first round.

That kind of bullsh*t makes me feel like i wasted my time.

Less about manning up and more about the reinforcements spawning with the main group. Tried it a few times, between sensor locks and lrm boats/ jagermech theres not much chance to even take advantage of positioning. 4 isn't beating 8 all at once. Not when the tonnages are about the same per mech.

3 skull mission a battle mission they have 2 dragons and 2 PPC tanks and a reinforcement of a full jaeger mech lance and one dragon

Well, that's military life for you. Intel? You can't trust intel, man, they _never_ get it right!

On a more serious note, the skull rating are an aproximation and the force actually encountered varies by a full skull, I believe, so if you take a 3-skull mission, you can encounter anything from a 2-skull up to a 4-skull OPFOR.

That's what the "Retreat" function is there for. If you face overwhelming odds, you just bug out. I guess people are often forgetting that ability is there for just those cases.

P.s.: I agree that the reinforcemant spawning one or two turns into the match is pretty bad.

I wasn't aware there was a full retreat option actually... Good to know! I wound up winning that match, though had one mech destroyed and my second best pilot killed. Its a shame you can't bargain for more than 4 pieces of salvage on most missions, lotta good stuff there I'd love to take with me.

Remember also the planets have their own skull ratings. Maybe a 4 skull missionb on a half skull plant has some effect of the opposing forces composition?
Skulls and missions breifings sadly have little impact on what you'll face. Most of the time it'll just be random.
(Of course it still gets harder over time).
A 3.5 skull can throw more heavy mechs at you than a 4.5 , and a 4 has given me a mission with only 1 mech in it XD

Just an unfinished system that sadly doesn't live up to the rest of the game.

Hey anyone fielding more then a lance?!?!? Have you all unlocked the Argos totally yet? If now why did the give us the option of 3 sets of mech bays?!?!?

Remember the skull rating is your bro's estimate of the difficulty based on the limited info he has.

I did a 4.5 skull mission and went for max salvage, ended up fighting mediums and a few small heavies.

Yeah I hate this I usually encounter them in the same round and sometimes even first. In testing did they test with a lance of 4 lights?

You can only ever field 4 mechs in the campaign from what I've experianced so far. Upgrading simply lets you have more mechs to chose from/store.
Kinda a stupid way to do it.
In skirmish it's based on Tonnage/Cost which makes light mechs a lot more viable. Wish the campaign was tonnage based too :/

One lance is all you get. If you dont understand the mechs variable, i suggest you go learn a bit more about what is light, medium,heavy and assault mechs roles. And there are specializations between those mechs too.

18 mech bays for 4 pilots is jut not enough. you allready wield 4 of each type and have only 2 extra for different combos, not good.

I just did a 3 skull that was interesting, a battle mission with reinforcements.
First go the reinforments showed up directly behind me right as i started shooting at the main force. The reinforcments were 1 light mech, 1 medium, 2 heavy. The main force was 1 med, 3 heavy. 4 of the heavys were 75 ton. My force was, a lazer tank knight, 1 ac 20 tank jaeger, and 2 med LMR boats.
My jaeger one shot the light mech and the med from the reinforcments, while my other 3 pownded the main force but i eventually got overwhelmed, with my knight in peices and my ac 20 out of ammo i knew it was over so i restarted.

This time i moved in the opposite direction looking for the reinforcments. I got them one at a time as they came over a hill and took almost no damage in the process, but this time it was only 3 mechs, 2 med and 1 heavy. I positioned myself to take on the main force and soon discoverd that they were all vehicles this time...... Nasty, OP as ♥♥♥♥ vehicles. The first one that came into view was a smr carrior which i killed instantly, the next one was a multi pcp tank that almost blew off my knights arm and the third was a duel ac20 tank which casually one shot my jaeger with a cockpit hit.

So on the 3rd try same strat, reinforcements were the same, but this time the main force was 2 heavys, and 2 of those evil ac20 tanks. Managed get them without any real damage this time though.
