Defense of Panzyr is one crazy overtuned mission
So I am on redo 7 now. This is totally crazy, does anyone have any tips on that?
I load 2 Heavies and 2 Assaults. The APC's can simply reach the mission goal in 2 rounds at the beginning, it takes me at least 2 mechs to destroy one most of the time.

Then the side objective. How do you save the barracks? It takes me 3 rounds of sprint from the beginning to get up there but the apc is already there on round 3.

I tried going with lighter mechs, but there are 55 ton mechs up there that squash my light stuff.

I did it with 3 mediums and a heavy - wiped out the enemy and destroyed the control center with 2 rounds remaining. The trick was that when I was heading down the ramp to the dropship area and the hunchback 4g stepped out to greet me, I kept one medium going.

My Enforcer made a beeline for the command center and got there and destroyed it while my remaing two mediums and heavy destroyed the enemy force with the assists of the turrets.

ETA: I have jumpjets on that mech so jumping the small mountain you'd have to go around right where the 4G pops up might be necessary.

Also one of my mediums packs two lrm15s. So I wiped out the vehicles very fast. Almost didn't stop.

Maybe try a dragon. Good armor, good speed, easily capable of squashing vees. I’ll find out when I get there, lol

Wrong mission mate.

oops.

yeah this mission is insane, the APCs start way too close to their destination, this is ridiculous.

I think that is bugged tbh.

The secondary objective (hospital) is impossible to get to, those APCs move twice as far as I believe they are supposed to.

I completed the mission on my second try, once I knew where they were comming from but it is ridiculous.

You need to use precise shot. The Highlander, any other Assault mech, and the Orion Heavy can all confortably take out one a turn with precise shot and Called Shot Mastery (giving you 90% chance to hit the same armour when using precise shot).

I took out all 6 APCs plus all but 1 mech before they even got close. I did lose the barracks however (my Thunderbolt was not fast enough to save it).

Thanks for the tactical tip - I think it will be useful :)

I just beat it with x1(SLDF highlander with gauss) + Thunderbolt + grasshopper + cataphract.
Arm with + ++ morale generate item, almost non-stop precise shot.

APC is annoying but able to deal it, Problem is hospital.
I can't save wounded enlisted soldiers at hospital building.

All get slaughered by enemy commando in APC & captured CO.
That's impossible to do without light mech. Even run with light mech, highly doubt to do that.

I completed all the objectives with 2 Battlemasters the Highlander and a Jenner... The Jenner saved the barracks by running and stepping on the weaker apc that goes for it, then just running away while the mechs up there chased. The the assaults just focused the other APC. The APC on the right will get there on turn 2 so he needs to die first. The only trouble I had after that was with the last APC that comes in on the back side and only because it brings an SRM carrier with it... almost lost the highlander to two salvos from that thing...

Glad to see that this wasn't just me.... I've restarted the mission a couple times and kept losing on round 2 when the APC reaches the destination. Some good tips in this thread - but to be honest I really think that this mission should be revamped - not sure if it was intentionally designed this way or just poorly designed, but obviously it's griefed more than just me...
Thanks for starting (and contributing) to the thread! It's a real morale boost and some useful info.

You can block the APCs from entering the base with your mechs. Just put one in each door way and they won’t be able to get past.

Then send a fast unit with jump jets up to the hospital to take out that one APC

Once you realize your mechs can block the missions is a lot easier

That's Liberate Panzyr, not Defend

I was able to achieve all objectives, even saving the hospital. The good news is the hospital isn't being attacked by those heavily armored Sleipnirs (sp?) but rather by a 10 ton wheeled APC that takes far less damage to destroy. I sent a scout (max evasion and extra sprint speed) pilot in a Jenner with 2 med. lasers and an SRM 6 ++ up the hill towards it. Still had to use precision shot to make sure I slagged it in one turn. It took 2 turns to get up the hill and a move + shoot turn to hit the wheeled APC.

The other trick to beating the mission is to physically block the 2 gates into the command center with mechs. Park them right in the gaps in the walls. Even though it looks like the APCs can roll past you, the AI considers the path blocked and parks them. There is a 3rd opening that doesn't face the enemy starting locations but they seemed to ignore it when I beat the mission.

Even after figuring those two things out I still very nearly lost an Orion when it got knocked down and lost 70% of its armor and a leg.
