Basically their technology is much more advanced compared to the Inner Sphere houses.
Their mechs can be better armored, better armed and capable of doing much more damage at greater ranges and less heat compared to the people they were fighting.
If (when) we see the clans in the game, their mechs can spend less time being refit, their weapons will do much more damage, less heat, longer range and not as much problems with minimum ranges as we have now.
- Their equipment does more damage than the IS version. A Clan ER PPC does 15 points of damage and an IS ER PPC does 10 points of damage.
- Their equipment weighs less than the IS version. A Clan SRM 6 weighs 1.5 tons, an IS SRM 6 weighs 3 tons.
- Their equipment takes up fewer critical slots. Clan Endo-steel takes up 7 slots and IS Endo-Steel takes up 14 slots.
Put all of this together and the Clan mechs are carrying twice the weaponry or more, relative to their IS counterparts and that weaponry does more damage. This is relative to TL-2 IS mechs, which are about twice as powerful as the TL-1 mechs in this game.To summarize: Clan mechs do around 5 times the damage of the TL-1 mechs in this game.
So far, no, it doesn't seem like there is any gameplay difference other than the stats you get by selecting them as a background and the missions they give out. Which is a shame, but not really a fault of the game itself. Battletech itself is not very big on distinguishing the factions too much beyond fluff.
Man, I so wish for some Clan Mechs and equipment...
Yes, I meant this current game on steam for about $40.
When you first start your character, you are given some clans to choose from and some back ground options to choose.... "Did you get exile?? Did you join the _____ ?
Job choices seem to give you different bonuses. +1 guts, gunner.
Not seeing any differencs in Clans ( Houses?? ) at this moment.
To answer the question best I can, that choice mostly affects conversations you have with people. There's no material benefit to the choice. For Roleplay reasons you might want to go for the one that sounds like it has a personality like you want your main character to be. But nothing says you have to play according to type.
