How do you upgrade the ship?
active mech bays, medical bays, "mechtech", how do you upgrade? I don't see where

It is. Just do a few story misson and you get a bigger upgradable ship.

Have you tried manually updating the queue? I've found that sometimes, a large repair job is stacked before a bunch of little ones, and if you rearrange it to get your small repairs done first, you'll get a drop capable lance together faster than waiting for that one large job which is holding up the rest of the repairs.

Theres also random RP text events that boost medical or tech for 30 days.

Do one more story mission and you get the Argo. Then you can start upgrading it.

Nah. If you have the money just wait and regroup. People get this idea that the long wait times mean the game is over but if you try to keep at least one month upkeep in reserve that means you have 30 to 59 days before you HAVE to go on another mission.

Not to mention you most likely have a pile of scrap and extra components you could sell.
