It is. Just do a few story misson and you get a bigger upgradable ship.
Do one more story mission and you get the Argo. Then you can start upgrading it.
Nah. If you have the money just wait and regroup. People get this idea that the long wait times mean the game is over but if you try to keep at least one month upkeep in reserve that means you have 30 to 59 days before you HAVE to go on another mission.
Not to mention you most likely have a pile of scrap and extra components you could sell.
