Because Lady Arano only hired your crew because of you.
I mean, I'm sure they could have made the commander disposable but essentially it's part of the plot hammer.
I don't mind it though. You can put your commander in a light mech and be certain they'll live.
Live in the med bay for monts you mean.
Better that than dead, I suppose, which is what could happen to another pilot. Just saying. Obviously the best scenario is 'dont expose low armor mechs to risk'.
Right? My first mission was ... not so great. :P
It does mean your character, assuming he(or she or whatever) is healed up is a great reserve pilot for those missions where the mech comes back basically just scratched but the mechwarrior is in bed for a month.
That is actually quite generous, for recovery, in truth. I think they struck a nice balance, but some people are apparently modding it to different values for their games.
Also, yes, you should have more mechwarriors than mechs, and spare mechs.
