Stuff about "water".
I'm a bit curious about how "water" would work in the game. Now I know the game's not out yet but I'm curious if there will be any mechanics that has to do with water. I know that adding in a fully worked on underwater combat would be too hard and time consuming but it would be nice if there were smaller features like your mechs being slowed down if they're in water or having them cool down faster while submerged in water. It would be really cool if there were mechanics like that but for now, here's hoping for the best.

Water works exactly like that in BATTLETECH.

No underwater combat yet. Maybe in sucess. Standing in water does give you a cooling bonus. I don't recall whether it effected other things.

Oh ♥♥♥♥ what! This is AMAZING!! Heck, here I was thinking that even having some small water mechanics would have been impossible. Wow, this is great. wooh.

From Sarna.

Depth 1 +1 to hit BattleMech in Water hex because it counts as Partial Cover
Depth 2 BattleMechs cannot fire into or out of Depth 2+ water
Partial Cover +1 (Leg location hits strike cover, apply damage to cover, quad mechs apply to both front and rear legs)

Now I want to see quad mechs in the game

Sounds marvelous!

From the Battletech Compendium:

You also get an additional -1 to heat per turn, per heat sink that is underwater to a maximum of -6. There are also modifications to:
  • movement rules (4MP to move underwater)
  • weapon ranges when firing underwater (only torpedoes and energy weapons), weapons that are underwater cannot fire at targets above water and vice-versa. Really you can only shoot other underwater battlemechs and submarines.
  • Melee attacks (reduced damage).
  • Underwater portions of a mech (or submarine) that are damaged have a chance of flooding and becoming inoperative. If an underwater section of a mech loses all its armor it becomes inoperative even if it still has internal structure left.

I'm not sure how much of that was changed since the compendium was written, or how much was implemented.

As of the Beta....

Being in water reduced your movement speed, and increased the rate of heat disipation. I can't recall if it had any other effects. I have a feeling at one point it may have influenced stability, but it might be my memory playing tricks on me.

It is not exactly like tabletop because in tabletop every hex you moved in water you had to make a piloting check or fall down.

Which made you really nervous when you had to go into water. Because falling down was almost always bad for you. Although it did submerge your mech so you could not be seen, so sometimes not always bad. Unless of course you had open areas damaged with internals exposed to the water causing problems to that area. :)

So basic water is modeled like tabletop, movement decreased and some heat sink bonuses. (to high for my taste, will probably lower it by modding).

Water doesn't improve stability, but the sandy banks of rivers do (but they don't improve cooling). You can see the effect with the icons that hover over the terrain hex when you mouse over, or now with the improved interface at the left side of the screen.

Depending on depth, move slower.

from what I understand, if your mech has heat sinks in the legs, water will give you cooldown bonus. I forgot if that is tabletop rules or MWO rules

In tabletop it matters if they are in your legs. Not in this game, at least not during beta.

So I am not sure how it will be in the final game. It may be out of scope to track heat sinks in legs in water, etc.

So we will see in less than a month.

Because the effect of water worked on all the heat sinks, it felt to me it was to powerful. Modders can with very little work tweak that. I plan on doing so and lowering the effect of water. Almost all the mechs could stand in water and repeatedly alpha strike. Not all of them, but alot of them.

Since movement in water does not have the risk to fall. It is a good idea. You do not get bonus to damage absorption by standing in the open, but with the right abilities (bulwark) you can absorb damage while dishing out max punishment longer than usual. This is surprisingly effective for LRM boats or Awesome 8Q just unleasing nastiness each round. Concentrate your fire, wipe one mech off the board each turn or so.

Now use spotters and lead the enemy into the kill sack for your water bound alpha strikers and it is a wipe out.

But beware this will only work against the AI, good players will not fall for this in pvp. And if line of sight rules are raised with a mod. The AI usually will not fall for this either. This worked well when the AI could not see. Especially if you killed his light recon mech (eyes) early in a skirmish battle.

One more thing, you can only enter shallow water (roughly knee-deep) in this game. No hiding submerged, deep water cannot be entered. On the other hand you can use smart positioning and/or jump jets to keep the enemy out of melee range.
