Does this game play like the old Front Mission games?
It sort of looks like the old Front Mission games as a turn based strategy game. Is that what it is?

It is turn bases with 5 phases lights moving first and assault moving last less you wait. But is it turn based yes.

It is similar in the sense that they are both turn based, move then shoot with parts being destructible, and mechs. I've only played #3.

But this is based off of the board game with lots of the mechanics coming from that. There are quite a few changes, but the essence is still there.

For this game, heat management is a big factor. There are no action points or counter attacks/interrupts. Facing matters as far as where you'll take the hits and where you are likely to hit your opponent. It is still random for where you hit though, but you can tip the scales in your favor.

Mechs are customizable as far as weapons, heat, armor, and jumping go, but not for speed or for weight. Each mech has it's own weight limit in 5 ton increments and it cannot be changed.

I read somewhere that for back then, if you wanted a good BT video game, then play Front Mission 3.

Yes, but less "RPG" than Front Mission. There's a Campaign mode that has a set of main story missions, but it's mostly just the turn-based combat thing - you can do the "Diablo"/rogue-lite approach, and just fight mission after mission after mission, improving your pilots & farming better gear. Career mode dismisses the story entirely. And Skirmish & Multiplayer are just one-off battles.

(also, the mech customization is different - you don't put together whatever arm/leg/torso you want, you salvage/capture entire mech chassis and can alter their armor/weapon loadouts/equipment.)

...so now I want to find a new game... :)

(goes to see if Front Mission 3 is on steam....)

edit: looks like Front Mission Evolved is the only one here, which based on the reviews is not what I'm looking for... Ah, well, maybe on GoG!

Yeah, FM Evolved was really disappointing. :|

(I don't think there were ever PC versions of the other Front Mission games. Outside of running a Playstation emulator, that is.)

edit: and it looks like FM3 and FM Evolved are the only ones on PSN. And only on the PS3, not the PS4. /sigh

I have FM 3 for the Vita. If you have a PS4, I cannot recommend the Vita enough. It's perfect for me on days I am laid up and can barely move, has lots of good games on it, and access to classic games as well. Also, since I just got a PS4, I have discovered the joy of streaming PS4 games onto it. I try to wheel outside as often as I can and just enjoy the weather and let the dog get his exercise in, and it is nice to have that to play to occupy some of my time.

FM Evolved was kind of a fun shooter, but it definitely could have been better. I enjoyed it well enough, but cannot say I'd recommend it either.

There are 2 front mission esque games in the works by indie devs

That one is... An action oriented 3rd person turn based game, like valkyria chronicles but with front mission esque mechs.

Hm that's a "new" proper trailer for the 2nd game that I didn't even know about before trying to find videos for this post, this one is a proper front mission turn based clone with fully destructible environment and modern flashy UI.

Here's how phantom brigade gameplay look like, a proper front mission clone.

well, I might be in luck then - my only console is an aging PS3 that mostly gets use as a blu-ray DVD player for the projector in the movie room. Wonder if I can find a used copy locally somewhere... :)

honestly just go emulate FM4 and 5 with a PS2 emulator. Great games for mech fans, surprised a BT fan hasn't played it. I am sure you will enjoy.

have the same opinion on FM evolved, not to mention Left Alive :steamfacepalm: not a front mission game worth playing :steamsad: sad stuff
i played front mission 2 as a substitute for Battle Tech, because there wasn´t really something else back then...

so i´d say, sure... there are some resemblences :)
