Also, on tabletop I loved building Archers with a hatchet in each hand..:)
Rifleman/Jagermech - yawn - but at least the Rifleman at 60 tons doesn't have a ridiculously oversized engine like most 60 tonners
wait, so they're putting quirks in? Oh boy...
They kinda have to so there's a reason beyond nostalgia to use the not-Macross mechs.
Archer improves LRM clustering and increases SRM stability damage by a lot.
The quirks pretty much mean DLC mechs will be better than the equivalent base game ones.
From the standpoint of "same mech", I really think it's Jager/Catapult/Thunderbolt are the same mech - they're all 4 speed, 65 tonners with a bunch of hardpoints and the same max armor. Only difference is the visuals - I've made almost the exact same build on a Catapult and a missile Jager (2xSRM6 in the arms, 2xLLas in the side torsos).
Even ignoring the quirks, the Archer & Rifleman are at least different tonnages than those others. (Rifleman is especially welcome, since it's a 60 ton mech that isn't 5-speed.)
edit: it would be nice if they went back and figured out quirks for the older mechs, so the new ones weren't quite so automatically better. Of course, the quirks take up crit spaces, which will be especially annoying on mechs that end up without Head space for an Injury mod, or without room for a Gyro (if there are any like that)
From my table top days mechs with out hands and lower arm actuators would have a little more space for weapons, Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous armor for custom mechs. I think MWO does something similar.
While this game doesn't give pros or cons for Mechs missing hands and lower arms that I know of it does help in other games and gives some reason for the other models in some cases.
And I agree I think all IS mechs should have some quirks, I remember reading all the fluff of the Tech read outs back in the day about how X Mech was known for this feature or had such and such flaw. It would bring some variety and character to the game having to look not at just the final tonnage of your mech but it's features compared to your play style.
I believe it's a factor in the mech's Melee Damage rating.
That's good to hear, sounds like a good feature. Though that doesn't seem to discourage all the Locust mechs from kicking me in melee, sans arms or not. *smirks*
