Orbital Bombardment
Isn't this against the Ares accords?

It is, but it's also mostly moot because no one is supposed to even have warships to even violate the rules.

How they figure Kurita has a warship sitting around, waiting to be used on a low level merc mission, seems a complete lore breaking mystery.

Was kinda my thought. But then again, it's just one shell, so maybe it doesn't count as "bombardment?" But I would presume using one would eventually lead to many and progressive breaking of the accordance, as a new quiet arms race would ensue.

Well it might be a misuse of the term warship, as there were a couple dropships that could be used in that manner

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Category:Pocket_WarShip_classes

And most of them were refits of standard designs. So not too far fetched for them to have a couple available with naval weaponry refits for precision strikes out in the periphery where questions and issues are easily passed off as rumors

There are lots of violations of the Ares Accords going on (destroying mech factories, attacking starports and infrastructure, etc.). Then again the bigger problem with that mission is that by 3028, the Warship (and naval weaponry) should be extinct (or in mothballs). Any surviving naval weaponry should be defending the handful of shipyards that the Great Houses still have.

From some of the in game spiel I think its restrictions on bombarbment so scale is important, A tactical bunker buster = ok but city wide scale destruction or asteriod lobbing is not.

This makes sense. The whole "shtick" with mechs in the BattleTech/Mechwarrior universe was to minimize civillian/civic casualties by nuking eachother as apparently the Great Houses can't prosper when a planet and it's life are decimated.

Since this is able to strike a specific building, might not even count as a bombardment. Probably not even a warship considering they need onsite target aquisition. More likely just something rigged up to create a powerful bluff. Compared to other in game story attacks, it is on par with long toms. So it probably isnt a direct strike even, but just a guided orbital bomb/missile.

When they say 'warship' all it means is a ship capable of launching weapons. A refitted dropship is good enough and more understandable for this time in the universe.

But WarShip is different from warship. In battletech, a WarShip refers to an armed combat ship with an FTL/Jump drive. So when an actual WarShip is used, that is something serious.

It also includes pocket warships which were converted dropships armed with capital weapons.

In fact most assault dropships had at least one refited variant with capital missiles or iirc naval lasers/ppcs on it. Though the missiles were most common

But those are not WarShips. The capitals make the difference. The mission statement has it spelled with caps making it the pronoun of actual WarShip, not just a noun. With that capitalization, they are saying it is one of the massive space drydock built dreadnoughts.

Pocket WarShips are still just dropships. Is what I was saying earlier that it wasnt actually just a warship, but them blustering. But attempting to instill fear by bluffing it was an actual WarShip.

I would say its a pocket warship due to the need for ground targeting rather than just using the main sensors of a real warship to simply do the job from orbit.

I think you're correct. It's just one shell meant to be a "fire for effect" show of force. Not a WarShip, but rather a warship, lol.
