Then just take missions run your merc unit and if you have any DLC do flashpoint missions
The story campaign is a bit easier because the story missions have large payouts and occasional free mechs - but flashpoints will not start until you complete all the story missions
If you are looking for a more open world, merc company experience, then I would suggest the career mode. this is exactly what it is for.
If you want to spice it up, I would suggest at least perusing the BT mods over at the Nexus. In my opinion, Battletech Advanced 3025 is a great mod for adding variety in terms of opponents and general mech variants, as well as fleshing out the mech distribution based on the lore behind each major house. BTE 3025 - commander's edition expands on this by adding in new features like a full Inner Sphere map, and many more changes. Something like Battletech Advanced (what I am using currently), propels the timeline and includes features like more configurable mechs in the lab/bays, balance changes and additional tech changes. Many people also like RogueTech, which I personally have not played, but as I have said, many people like it, and it modifies the game considerably.
RogueTech is best described as taking all rule and source books that are BattleTech and beating the code with it until RT Happened ;)
RogueTechs biggest goal is to include everything Battletech and adapt it
Thank you Boltergeist, I didn't want to try to describe it mostly because I haven't used it, though I am watching quite intently as you guys work on the new version. Also, thanks for making it.
I was also trying to list out some popular mods in terms of how far they deviate from the vanilla BT, so the OP might be able to pick where he/she might want to jump in on running a mod if they choose.
campaign is a set of a few story missions where most of the galaxy is locked off as you help the noble of the campaign reclaim her birthright. when it ends the galaxy opens up
Career is an open galaxy get as many points before the timer runs out sort of deal. when it ends you can keep playing for no score.
