Flamers are really for the tactically-minded commander. Used well, they can turn off an enemy for two turns with a single salvo. In high-heat environments, a support 'Mech with half a dozen flamers can safely allow a lighter lance to close in to melee range with a big scary target and not run the risk of getting 110-damage head chopped, all while dumping heat of their own scratching and kicking at the big guy.

For general use, ++dam SLas is the way to go. Flamer is better situationally, but the limited ammo change made those situations less frequent ^_^

Or get ++ flamers, they deal +50% heat damage, so you can switch 1-2 off to conserve their ammo and still overheat the target in one volley.
I wouldn't use SL++ much though, unless it's on Grasshopper. They aren't very common, and losing one could be unpleasant.

MG's FTW lol :steamhappy:

As noted... Flamers are a very niche weapon not everyone is going to utilize best... and best used early game from my experience. Late game I don't find much use for them... even with Assault Mechs.

yeah if I close to knife range with an enemy I'm just gonna kill it. flamers can be pretty nice in a david v goliath way, cooking an enemy mech but.....just SRM them to death.

Go in to the .JSON file for Flamers and change the starting capacity to what you want. I use 200.

Hey...that's not a very nice word to call people "flamers"

Yeah, Flamers are more for the AI to use against you than a reliable strategy vs them. I do like to use them on spare mounts for Mechs that will only use them occasionally. A pair on a Blackjack, for instance, is a nice surprise in close quarters. If you are using a dedicated punch-bot, I'd suggest either of the other two options. Lasers are more consistent, but MGs are really nasty if you can get them into an enemy who's had their armor stripped away. They do, however, suck against any kind of cover.

Why do flamers even have ammo? I mean, the 'Mech-scale ones always drew right off the reactor to do their evil work and only the ones mounted in vehicles used ammunition.

It was added for skirmishes , to prevent abuse

Not just for skirmishes, but yeah, if you have no ammo (as in TT rules), flamers are basically the best weapon in the game when combined with the right chassis, or as in TT, just loading a mech up with a ton of 'em.
