They do suck though.
Another factor is that the "rare weapon" system they have in this game (the +/++/+++ variants) skew the balance off what's 'good' or not. A +10dmg ML or +4dmg SRM is amazingly better than the stock version. Meanwhile, a non-+ Pulse laser. . . eh.
There's also differences in how each game handles accuracy and accuracy bonuses. In the tabletop game, Pulse Lasers get a +2 bonus to hit on a 2D6 roll. That's pretty huge, and makes up for the fact that the rest of the stats are bad (shorter range, higher heat, heavier). Meanwhile, this game is on a 100% scale, and has modifiers like "+1 for arm-mounted weapons" and "+1 for all lasers". Among other changes.
