Who is the false son, and why does he insist on throwing lighting bolts at me?

Just met him and he mopped the floor with my sniping a ss. I rly hope he isnt providence I dont wanna deal with his salty a ss. And if your stone a ss is reading this you walmart golem, please chill out I just waltzed into here T-T

Lore-wise (according to videos prior to release), he is a statue created by Lemurians who looked up to/worshiped Providence and wanted a guardian after his death, hence why he looks similar. Aurelionite--possibly through sheer force of hatred for the Brothers locking her away for eternity--was able to infuse some of herself into the statue and animate it. Some Alloy Vultures, who worshiped Mithrix, attacked False Son with some form of Lunar item and corrupted him.

So, False Son is in the image of Providence, has power from Mithrix, and the anger of Aurelionite.

Uh... devs needed a gimmick to give you access to him. The shrines take you to the Path of the Colossus, which takes place on various parts of a massive statue of Providence, whom False Son is modeled after.

actually I didnt know that it was called the path of the colossus, I just called it the hollycon route. :P
