The two games are vastly different and playing the first doesn't offer anything to add onto the RoR2 experience except for, "Oh this is like one of those items from RoR1! (It is only item references)" You can play the first if you want, but there's no need to.

I agree with above, the two games are so fundamentally different that if they didnt have the same name/characters you wouldnt be able to tell they were from the same Devs. If you like platformers and tough Roguelikes, you might find the first one a lot of fun. But personally, i find Risk of Rain 2 to be a more fun game than the first one (that includes Risk of Rain Returns, the remake of the first one).

If you're worried about missing the plot, don't worry, it doesn't matter. Is it neat to find how and why they're linked? Yeah. Will you miss out on some secret that makes the game easier or an unlockable because you didn't learn about a specific cargo container from the first game? No. All of the games are self-contained. Only 1 character canonically appeared in multiple games but even then it doesn't matter.

ill just say this, the story is cool, but you could just watch a video or read about the region as well as providence and mithrix and know all if it in a few mins. there is a bit of lore with the chars/bosses/regions that overlap. 1st game is really good but really different. 2d platformer and wayyyy harder/slower

i have like 25+ character a bunch of new maps and items really cool
