Wrong, that decision has nothing to do with the donation button.

he doesnt need money hes a professional dev
greedy

idk the mod or the guy, but his work is his property and he is under no obligation to support it for free for all eternity.

It's the same with pirated games scene - people expect talented devs to work for months cracking a single Denuvo release and lose their ♥♥♥♥ if those mention any sort of payment via donations.

No one owes you anything, get over yourself

Its not wrong to want money for your work. Not greedy. Whether he is rich or poor is irrelevant. It is wrong to demand donations. Donations are by definition voluntary, and iirc nexus's policy is strictly no purchases required, which may heavily be because this next point. Its also wrong/illegal to demand money in any form for any form of work protected under copyright. Both the platform and the mod dev could be in legal trouble.

Technically correct, but A leads to B leads to C is also right.

Curious, when did this happen? Its been a 2-3 weeks since I played or checked mods. So I;m guessing very recent?

Can you tell me where is he demanding donations?

In the donation link on the mods website (which is the github repository of the mod) it says:
Hey! My name is Faby. Thanks for clicking on the sponsor link. I do a lot of different things, and I like to improve my favorite games with mods.

I make a few for Risk of Rain 2, like BetterUI and MoreItems. That's probably how you know me and probably how you found this page!

Right now, my biggest project is BetterUI, a mod for Risk of Rain 2. It adds a significant number of improvements and changes to the UI, as well as being fully configurable. Working on this takes a lot of time, especially making sure it's compatible with as many mods as possible.

I also like to work on creative uses for Discord bots, like TimelapseBot.py, and any other projects that come to mind. I share everything I make here on Github.

Although I have a lot of fun working on these projects, they take up a significant amount of my time. I would like to be able to support myself financially while being free to work on what I like. Even a small donation helps a lot with that goal. Sponsoring me is an easy way to support me and directly reward me for my work.

In the main menu it says:
Thanks for using BetterUI! If you enjoy the mod please consider donating to enable me to keep working on it as much as possible.

In the future, this window will allow you to edit the settings for BetterUI!

From what I see he's asking people to consider donating to him if they want. That doesn't look like "demanding donations" at all.

Also just got into the discord and about it being deprecated, it says:

BetterUI has been deprecated on Thunderstore because an existing feature in BetterUI, a blacklist which would (safely) stop the mod from running for certain users, is in violation of a new ruling that disallows such access control features.

As of now, the latest version of BetterUI remains on the store but deprecated, still working on the latest version of the game and available to download.

Because this recent ruling fundamentally goes against some of my morals regarding developer’s rights to control their work, I’m currently unsure if I want to keep developing BetterUI and my other mods, and if I do, if I will keep them on Thunderstore or if I will distribute them elsewhere, like my Discord/GitHub.

I will be posting any updates to this situation on this discord.

You are also welcome to share your feedback regarding this decision and what you think the future of BetterUI and my other mods should look like in the discussion channel

Last update of the mod was 4 days ago and the message from its dev about it being deprecated was today.

I didn't say he did. Ask op. Supposedly he is "refusing to continue developing it until he gets them."

actually, I read that as donating enables him to spend less time on his actual job, because making free mods doesn't pay bills, but if you donate it will allow less time spent on day job and more time on modding

if you're going to quote him do it well. He said:

If you enjoy the mod please consider donating to enable me to keep working on it as much as possible.
And that reads: "I have bills to pay, and if I have to work more hours I'll have less time to work on mods. If you donate enough I'll not have to work more hours, thus I'll have more time to work on mods."
